  • Hobnobbing with orcs..or something..

In fantasy, second to dwarves, ive always 'loved' (not in the man-love way I assure you) orcs, ever since reading Lord of the Rings when I was 12 ive had a fascination for these charming humanoids. When Warhammer battle system first came out I had an army of orcs, the little lead bastards lovingly painted by me, made them warbanners an everything. Ive even cast my own orc minatures, leaving globs of metal spattered over the kitchen, much to the joy of, first, my mum and , later, my housemates. Orcs, orcs, orcs.... I even have an orc warbanner tattooed on my arm... I kid you not. Orcs... Aux.. oh yes, clever eh.. see what ive done there? Orcs are scum, the underdogs, freedom fighters, the fighting uruk, and sword fodder for countless adventurers... booo! But, Ive always envisioned orcs as the classic goblin-featured, scarred, pierced, iron-shod die-hards that come in all shapes an sizes....

...and not the hulking steroid orkz of the more recent Warhammer world, not the Planet of the Apes lookalikes we seem to have in DnD, and most certainly not like the original DnD concept of them being pig-like. This is from the ADnD 2nd Ed. Monster Manual irc...

...ye gods!... and someone probably got paid to draw that... no wonder TSR went to the dogs.

Which brings me to why Ive converted to hobgoblins these days, more like orcs than orcs are...

...and more to the point, where are they? What bright spark decided to leave them out of NWN2? I want hobgoblins damn it!... hobgoblins... HOBGOBLINS!!!

Do you have a favourite humanoid 'monster'? Or is it all about those nasty little tarks that oppress the poor orcs and goblinoids?

I must say it is that particular variant of orcs that I am fond of, especially the WoW styled-orcs who are honorable shamanistic guys that got issues with demon blood, not some stupid louts hidden in the ditch waiting for level 1 adventurers. But yah realistically the hobgoblin art you provided at the bottom is probably the closest to what an orc really should be in D&D, in my opinion.

Orcs, gnolls, hobgoblins and goblins are all cool creatures, that I can agree on.

And in pen and paper D&D it is fun to throw hordes of these creatures at the players, just to kill the players. (Ohh yes, I am Evil!)

Long time DnD Troll fan. The design of other trolls don't appeal to me, being the over sized lumberers that they are.

          Me Likes Kobolds!

          Kobolds are awesome ^^.

And trolls suck so much in WoW. They look retarded ^^, and the accent is annoying.

Blackguards the finest machines of spreading darkness the world has ever known.

They came from the blackness.. . .. .

My personal favorite monster in the game. . .
I know you could argue this isn't really a monster so to speak but they're still my favorite thing to defeat.

Too bad I'm waay behind in build to ever become one of these bad guys. XD

You'd think it would have to do something with killing them and thinking oh wow I did something good!
No thats not it at all, its more like, oh wow I killed one I'm the real badass now! Hoohah!

Personally, I think that if we are to make a blackguard on the server they have to make contact with an evil outsider >_> You know, for REAL.
They are the scions of evil! They should have a demon/devil backing their asses.

It would be pretty awesome to play as one of the monster races *nod nod* But... I think it would be rather... hard to do right

But as for favourite monster race? Me, I like Minotaur. My sister is fond of Wyvern

Kind of agree, but then wouldnt it only be fair to do the same for Favoured Souls and Paladins etc?

Not really as both are born with either the power or the calling.

Blackguards are not born;Blackguards are made.

                      But this is off topic

That's a difficult choice, a reaaaaal difficult choice, I'm stuck between Minotaurs and Hobgoblins, they're both sooo cool. Minotaurs. . . Hobgoblins. . . damn this is tough!

Would've been easier to choose the fave creature of all DnD creatures (starts with "n"). . . not just monstrous ones. . . monsters. . . ugh.

...and more to the point, where are they? What bright spark decided to leave them out of NWN2? I want hobgoblins damn it!... hobgoblins... HOBGOBLINS!!!
Maybe its me but, the Hobgobbo in that picture closely (Alright, maybe not closely) resembles the stock bugbear model for NWN 2. Perhaps it would be possible to just "create" hobgoblins using the Bugbear model? Just mah thoughts.

I have a thing for all of the 'savage' races over any of the 'common' sentient races. Goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears, orcs, gnolls, trolls, ogres, giants, kobolds, sahaguin, troglodytes, kuo-toa... Many iterations of Dungeons and Dragons have gone into finely crafting the make-up of many of these races' cultures and social workings, their habits and living patterns. In fact, I was overjoyed when I first came to Sundren, and saw that the Spittlefist Goblins had class levels, making them a serious threat to the starting adventurer - this highlighted, to me, the believability in how they could have survived long enough to even think about fleeing from the more dominant-species in the forests.

Eirimil Gaelazair (Dead)- Bitter. Caustic. Abrasive. Egocentric. Probably right. Found dead in the burned-out Viridale forest a few weeks after the survivors were able to sweep the area after the Bloodmaim offensive. Aside from his usual attire, an intricate music box was the only thing in his possession.

Not really a humanoid though... but I see where your coming from.

Have another orc pic as compensation...
