To offset the 'Race of Masculinity/Tiny Paul Bunyans' of the Dwarves, we had the elves.
Androgynous, waify, lean, and scarily skilled. Whole series of jokes and skits abound on the whole not being able to tell what gender they are. girlish-boys or boyish-girls? As said before, Andrej Pejic would be a good comparison (Voted 2011s 98th sexiest woman by FHM, before they realized he was a man).
DoTC have been making slow changes to stop gender-ambiguity in the races for a long time now. We've got clean-shaven dwarven ladies and lost a lot of the (s)he elves.
Sad really, I always thought it gave them more of a racial identity, rather than just being small/thin or smaller/stout humans.
