Just get a cape and rock it batman style.

Or say it's a budget Horo

    Or a travel cape (Gappa)

Or just the RP tangent that, seeing as Sundren is a bajillion miles from Kara-Tur and a hell of a lot colder, your Samurai might have seen a little sense in occasionally wearing a cape to keep the rain from utterly screwing his armour?

    Dunno.. Just suggestions.

You're playing a dual-wielder, pure melee class. I know the problems with this as I have played Ursus for a loonnnggg time that way. Unlike Ursus, you should have been able to put some more points in STR and CON due to not having to have a high DEX to get the dual wield feats. It's not really what you don't have as much as it is what you do have with these builds.

Tactics are the only way to play a dual-wielder. The long bow idea is a wonderful suggestion (The Way of the Blade and Bow and all). You can draw some enemies to you to keep from fighting multiple spawns in one spot. This is the only way to survive the Orcs without a metric shit-ton of buffs (or sneaker...that helps, too). I've been with you against the orcs. You simply charged in with your blades flying. Unless you have an AC in the 30s, that just doesn't work with that big of a group (and the 30 AC doesn't help all that much with so many attacking you at once...ask some of my toons). Remember, Samurai were not exactly cannon fodder shock troops. They were the elite officers that directed soldiers. They usually rode horses and picked and chose their targets more than the mundane foot soldiers they commanded. Hang back and use tactics to divide and conquer your enemies. Trust me, it does work. And if you're having trouble now, you are just gonna hate life at the 13+ level. You don't go anywhere you can get xp without a caster of some sort to back you up. Fighters just get hosed on a "low magic" server. Find a buddy (or 5).

Wear the cloaks. There are plenty of historical references to traveling capes in ancient Japan. You're not really headed off to war when you go out somewhere on Sundren. You're traveling with a group (or wandering alone...a bad idea for most melee toons on this world...sucks, but that's just how it is).

If you can't get hold of a decent Katana, use whatever you can find until you do. Just constantly emote crap like how poor the quality and balance is compared to what you had available back home. You might even try a character request post to quest for some sort of special weapon. I know others who have gotten hard to find weapon types this way. Just make the request thorough, concise, and well laid out and it may go over with one of the DMs. It's always worth a shot.

If you want to solo, be in events, or have power in PvP, just play a Cleric or Favoured Soul (or, to a lesser extent, an arcane caster, who really do have trouble up until about level 10).

If you want hard mode, play a fighter-style char.

Vary difficulty based on powerbuildness and RP things that stop you getting good gear, of which it sounds like you've done both. ( Hel's pretty powerbuilt, but damned if she's ever had any good gear. )

That's all there is to it.

I play a level 5 swashbuckler who has no trouble at all with gnolls providedc he has a buffer nearby

He essentially becomes the Tankbuckler with 24 ac (yay hide armor) and dual wielding,

So it's not super hard, just remember that as a melee bro, you need someone to buff you a little. Like a level 5 favored soul or wizard.

Should try and drop the duel weild for a few levels and hold a shield see if that helps a bit. doesnt have to be permanent but samauri are supposed to be tacticians , if they realize they are getting hit from all sides plan might need to change.

part of their code I believe is that to use a sheild is to be a coward....

also i didnt know charecter requests could also be for quests.....wow seriously did not know that....

also because the last server i played one with samurai type armor had the same basic principle of armor as the original but -1 to ac and +1 to dexterity based ac i built a decently high dexed samurai as i had no sources availble to me to tell me and i honestly should of asked...

What is this crap about being in events as a Cleric of FS?

The events I've ran lately have been... Paladin, Swashbuckler, Fighter, and Rogue/Assassin. Huh... No clerics in that list at all.

One thing I tend not to do is start many events while people are grinding. So upper levels tend to be in events because they're not out grinding since they got themselves capped anyway.

One BIG thing that helps me drag people into events is personality. Certainly everyone feels they have personality, but you'd be surprised how little personality people have. I like to focus my events on things that conflict with a specific person's personality and draw them into intrigues based on that. So if give a person a paragraph of text and their replies are:

                  *Nods*

                  *Sighs*

                  *Looks around*

^ This isn't personality to me, so I have no idea what to do with a person to draw them into the life of the events. But having some form of feeling on a matter helps me figure out WHO your character is, what their personality is.

*Narrows eyes as he is filled with righteous indignation.*

^ Stuff like this helps me know how you will respond to things.

I watch people walk by event hooks and chances to get involved so often just because of the dry responses to things.

*Nods* is probably the biggest response I get to hooks.

Events aren't always going to be monster attacks on places. I mean, there's a server full of monsters attacking things, so making that the focus of the events seems semi-silly to me.

To be completely fair to him on the shield thing, it might not be that easy since Samurai do not get shield proficiency for free.

Hey Godbeast. I heard you put a rant in a rant so we could rant while we rant.

                      But uh....

                      Just wondering...

Where's this thread going? Pretty sure it's strayed away from answering the OP's post.

                      Also.

                      *Nods.*

                      *Shrugs.*

                      *Shake's head.*

                      *Nods*

                      .....

                      *Nods*

                      *Shrugs*

Yeah because when Dain nods, it's to check and see if there is any dust on his boots from the last vampire he wasted.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Pretty sure he asked about events. And I'm pretty sure somebody said you have to be a cleric/FS to be in one.

The lack of shield is nothing to do with honour, and more to do with the facts that A; samurai were evolved from mounted archers, a role where shields would be a hindrance, B; the katana is most effectively wielded with two hands.
