Mwahaha, I was going to take the moral high ground for a minute there but you beat me to it Kangleton!

As my final post on this before I retire to my man cave: I think its clear that although we have harsh experience with the twenty sided die the fact remains that 72% of us would leave our character' fate in DM hands. *throws a fistfull of dollars on the bar*
    Personally I avoid violence

Just adding my nod to what Kangleton has mentioned, since he said what I'd have said, except I'd have said it better and more eloquently, because I'm not bald.

      Voted for option 1.

Perhaps one day your risks will reward you with a significant amount of flowing, beautiful locks, such the like that the Valley has never seen...not even in Rodderick Hughes.

But yeah, using other means of consequences aside from death can potentially be more devastating, while also being more memorable, and a fond memory is most often what we relate a good experience with, especially when it comes to things like roleplaying, or any form of literature or creativity.

I went with option one myself. The DM's job is essentially to play with and judge on the players characters actions & deeds as well as run the world around the characters in a fashion that could incorporate any concequence or reward depending on what/how the characters are played. I like the fact that there are spells that are classified as Eeevil and can effect the character accordingly. I think I've been given a few ticks towards evil at times because of it, and it is up to the player to take whatever the DM gives and incorporate it into that characters development.

It's all about balance I guess, and both the players and the DM's have a hand in developing characters destiny. The player can give his/her background, and goals and the DM can elaborate on that and incorporate things the player won't expect, and perhaps over time things come to fruition... or ruin if the character is unable to take what the world,-(DM) puts along that path

As far as permadeath goes, I would say that it would have to be both a player and DM decision, as well as highly story driven.

Im not sure permadeath would have to be highly story driven.. could be run over by a bus (not literal)!

When I said about the hellball incident with my mage, it was in fact just a rogue terrorist act that led no-where (yes I did have lots of elemental DR) that killed my character outright. I did feel bitter, but it was because a character 'resurrection'd me. All of the mass bodily trauma he suffered equated to 5% permanent spell failure, no fused limbs, no charred assets all because ressurection is a cure all that can litteraly recompose a minced body... but I suppose that varies based on the campaign, the DMs and the setting :S

I usually don't do anything too life-changing/hideous to people unless it's a consequence of their actions.
