  • Unconsciousness Instead of Death

Since we have a rule in place that "death" isn't really death anyway but just being severely wounded why not create a system that reflects this?

When reaching 0hp you fall to the floor and are unconscious. When in this condition you cannot be injured in any way (This is just to avoid the stupid scripts getting stuck and mobs killing unconscious dudes as currently happens)

As with the current system you would bleed out slowly, but the amount should be wayyyy more than the current -10hp to die. Maybe -50? That gives you a whole 300 seconds in which to be healed or your companions to mop up the enemies right Should be a Con check not a Fort save to stabilise though, otherwise with 50 chances to make the save no one would ever die.

Being knocked down and taken out the fight would still happen just as often, but getting sent to the Fugue and having to be resurrected would be avoided in many cases.

Disclaimer: I fully expect some people to think this is the worst idea ever

Let me be the first to be negative. Death is death. I rather appreciate the effort to make more wounded than actually dying, but being an adventurer is dangerous business.

I like the idea, but I also think the Fugue is a good way to indicate when someone should suffer from Memory Loss...

I am generally in favor of this. The more often death happens and people recover for it, the less meaningful death actually is. On some servers it's become such an out of control problem that it's impossible to take anything seriously IC, because death isn't perceived as a significant consequence.

This seems largely to be a matter of semantics. Why not simply rename the fugue to 'dream state' or 'unconscious state' or something to that effect?

We've done it where death is death for awhile. People quit the server, just saying.

It's fine how it is IMO.

Would be nice if enemies didn't target fallen or recently recovered PCs though. But this has been suggested MANY times.

Agreed. I come from a one death permadeath server, and I like the system we have.

The server has gone through many iterations of death, semi-death, almost dead, kind of dead, permadeath, and others.

                I like the current system.

The problem with a system that knocks you unconcious and leaves you laying there instead of shipping you to the fugue is this- How the hell do you plan on getting out of that situation, especially if you happen to have met your untimely end without compatriots around (honestly, am I the only person who actually enjoys a little solo time and wish there was more content for that?). What happens is the moment you recover from your unconcious state, and stand up and try to make your retreat is that you get hammered back down again. In an endless loop of misery, I might add. Congratulations, you're now stuck in that situation until someone happens along and finds you. With the trip to the fugue, you can at least get the hell out of there.

I think the system as it currently is, is fine.

I also like the way it is, save that id like the IG interface to reflect the agreed upon RP solution. We RP it as "unconcious and critically wounded." That's awesome. So why not change "Fugue" to "Unconciousness."
Why not change the temple priest's convorsation to refect that you aren't being brought back to life, but would be "recieving long term care." I only suggest this so that people understand that this is the direction Sundren has gone in. There are still players who don't know that we're supposed to RP tramatic injury rather than death. I suppose id be happy to update the convos.

I want to be clear about what I meant. I like the current mechanical system just fine. My suggestion was merely that being fugued and respawning should be interpreted as getting knocked out and revived instead of dying and being resurrected, because it lends death more weight. I am not advocating for any kind of system that changes how the mechanics of the game work.

Well that's what we have now Rekov, save that when you talk to an NPC to help your "unconcious" friend, they talk about raising the dead. It seems like it would help steer the player base in the direction we want if the NPCs reflect it in their dialog.

Id also like to see the cost of NPCs raising PCs made closer to the PC raise cost so that players would be more incentivised to use actually use a PC rather than just going to an NPC for a fraction of the cost. Currently temple raises are free because a bug, but should be 800. Casting raise dead is 5000 if you can even find a diamond to buy. I have yet to actually use the spell, and no one has asked me too because its just a no brainer to use the NPC.

I might have missed the indication, but I've seen absolutely nothing to suggest that you're not actually dying and coming back in-game. It definitely should be updated to reflect the desired RP so that new players get the memo.

I don't think their needs to be a hard and fast 'It is this' type system, just saying 'It isn't Death' and letting people figure the rest out for themselves is probably the simplest route. Personally I take a fairly adaptive approach,

If a PC is 'killed' when out with friends then they're in a coma from which they may recover on their own with a spot of physical impairment (respawn), die (never respawn, perma-death), receive immediate advanced assistance and/or a minor blessing of the gods that brings them back from the brink or via deus ex machina, depending on how you want to RP the spell (resurrection/raise dead).

If someone gets killed while out solo grinding they've got a load of excuses for respawning; breaking and fleeing home with their tail between their legs, staggering away, being knocked out and left for dead, found comatose by a passerby, etc etc.

The end result is all the same - actual death is avoided and gets saved for when it actually counts. What we don't want is patently silly stuff like:

"Hi Bob, how was your day?"

"Terrible, the cows kicked over the milk bucket and my wife ran off with a Banite. Yours?"

"Shocking, I got stabbed in the heart before breakfast, brutally murdered four times on my way to the office then torn into soggy scraps of flesh no larger than a hamster by a pack of ravenous wild dogs on the way home. All in all, bit of a shocker."

                              "..."

                              "I got better."

As for renaming spells, it might work, but would probably cause a lot of confusion to begin new and old players alike!
It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little - Do what you can.
