  • Mage Killer class

I've looked at this class many times, and each time I find the pre-req's to be much too demanding for such little return. You must take martial weapon prof. for a low BAB, two save feats, and combat casting.. There is also little flavor. This could be an amazing class for followers of: Azuth, Shar, Mystra, Bane, Selune, Helm, and others. Many of these faiths sport Wizards and Clerics that specialize in the fight against the mages of their enemy faiths.

I think this is a class with incredible RP potential for both Good and Evil.

*UPDATED TO REFLECT CHANGES IN IDEA*

    Mage Hunter:
    Skills: 2+INT
    Hit Dice: d8
    BAB: Medium
    Saves: Fort, Will
    Spell Progression: 5/10

    Requirements:
Spells: 2nd level Divine or Arcane
Feats: Magic Attuned, Iron Will, Weapon Focus (any), Martial Weapon Proficiency
    Skills: Spellcraft 8

Disruptive Strike- At first level a Mage Hunter can channel disruptive magics to his weapon for a number of rounds equal to 1/2 his Mage hunter levels (minimum 1) plus Charisma modifier rounds. At the first level each successful strike applies 5% spell failure for 2 rounds. At level 5 the duration increases to 3 rounds, and at 10th level the failure increases to 10%.

Weapon training- Martial training is important to a Mage Hunter as it is his main weapon against rogue mages. At the 3rd level Mage Hunters receive Weapon Specialization in their chosen weapon.

Spell Defense- Mage Hunters train and study endlessly to combat casters of all sorts. Due to this continued training Mage Hunters are more resistant to spells and gain +1 saves vs spells at levels 2,4,and 6.((Alternative is: Mage hunters receive a bonus to saves vs spells equal to their Charisma modifier at level 2))

Arcane resistance: Mage Hunters undergo a special ritual training that hardens them against the raw magics of the weave. They gain 5/- Resistance to magic at the 7th level.

Spell Resistance: At the pinnacle of their training, Mage Hunters perform a powerful ritual to further strengthen their resilience to spells. They receive spell resistance equal to 12+ their class levels. In addition to this Mage Hunters may boost this resistance by 10 for one minute per class level a number of times per day equal to their Charisma modifier +1.

    Class Skills:
    • Concentration
    • Crafting Weapon
    • Crafting Armor
    • Crafting Alchemy
    • Craft Trap
    • Intimidate
    • Spellcraft
    • Knowledge: Any
    • Gather Information
    • Use Magic Device

I know the staff has loads on their plates, and I can see this would take some serious work. However, I want to post it anyway.

I want to know what others think. Too much? Missing things? Different changes to suggest?

I think what your suggesting might be a little powerful. Tbf the current class is a joke (there isnt an active one on the server suprise suprise).

I definately think mage killer should be more like the wizard slayer/inquisitor bgII kit though. More martially focused with the ability to hamper spellcasting, at the moment it does little to kill mages

Why would anyone want to kill a mage? All we want is a little arcane magic

I've been contemplating an RP build like what you say for a long time, and I agree - every time I look at this class, and every time I cringe. I always thought it needed defensive capabilities vs spells, like the monk Diamond Soul.

I would think 5+level SR at the cost of most/all offensive extras would be awesome. Give them a 1-3/day dispel attack and the defensive capabilities and I think you have an effective mage killer. I figured the staff would be a little reluctant to grant SR through a class, though.

I played a Helmite witchhunter (Cleric/Magehunter) for quite a long time.

The class offers tons of fun RP value, oh the antics I had abusing party members for casting unrequested buffs, insulting Thayans for being bald whoremongers who suckle on the rancid teats of the Whore of Magic, Mystra. Plus persicuting all of the non-human races for being sub-human, filthy fey blooded, demon loving, rock worshipping scum.

I even tried a Wiz/EK/MK for the sake of entertainment.

It's not outright awful as a class, but it's hanging around the bottom end of the middling pool.

Even some simple changes would be great - a 9/10 or 8/10 (or lower) casting progression, medium/high BAB and D8 or D6 hit dice to represent the implied martial training needed for the class. SR as a peak ability would also be great and in keeping with the mage killing theme (although would probably warrant even less spell progression).
              Eira Skald - Icy bitch.
Karsten Mannerheim - Idealist and murderer.
Vincent Hopkins - Witch Hunter and man of faith.
Aedan Gilter - Dreamer of broken dreams.
Henry L. Jones - Oh god, I can see forever.

I would be interested in redoing it as a PrC for mundanes, but also granting some spell progression. I've flipped through some Pathfinder stuff, and looked at the BG kits Thief mentioned.

A big question though: Should there be any drawbacks? The kits in BGII forbid certain things (notably, magic items), which is why they got so much.

I'm a fan of OnHit cumulative spell failure*, that could apply to equipped weapons, or hostile spells cast on enemies. Not 10%, maybe 2% or 5%. Or 1% at 1st level, then increase up to 5% at 10.

SR and other resists would also be neat. Maybe SR 11+Class Level as a persistent base, with the ability to burn spell slots or vitality to boost the SR and give yourself Elemental/Magic reductions or immunities.

*True spell failure, not arcane spell failure. Applies to clerics and wizards equally, and not reduced by ASF reduction feats/items.

That sounds pretty awesome. I like the idea of both resistance to spells and disrupting them. Those two things should be the staple abilities. The only problem I have with 11+class level SR is that 21 is pretty useless. Though if it can be boosted for periods of time then that is perfect!

If made for the melee chars alone, with less then full spell progression, I think giving a 1/day Mords would be cool. It would be less then full caster level so not as powerful as a full blown mages. This class is all about disrupting casters and defeating them so a powerful dispelling as a weapon would be cool.

What I'm thinking for dispelling is a per day ability that applies a Dispel OnHit to the weapon for one hit, maybe a spell breach. And again, it could also apply to the next cast spell, if the MK can do that. Activate the feat, get a single free dispel added to your next weapon or spell hit on the target. Stack two dispels, or let lose with a dispelling fireball!

Spellcasters will get an additional feat that will let them burn prepared castings of dispel to do the same thing.

In BGII the cumulative spell failure even applied when hitting mirror images or striking against DR which made the wizard slayer very effective. I dont think forsaking all magical items is too much of a strain, especially on a low magic world like sundren.

Especially if your character say... started as a spellcaster?

Yeah, Sundren might have been low magic in 2008, when that entry was written, when the level cap was still 15, but not so much anymore. Any server with 20th level casters can't really profess to be low magic.
