Die Hard: Give an option just after character creation for someone to select the "Die Hard" trait. This trait multiplies (maybe by x3) the amount of XP someone gets from the RP XP trickle. However, they now only have a maximum number of respawns (say, 5-10). They burn bright, but die fast. Level easier, but die off easier.

The Road More Traveled: Someone who takes the road more traveled perk after character creation gets a multiplier to their RP XP trickle but loses their ability to gain XP from spawns. This is for the crafters, tradesmen, merchants, scholars, pacifists, preachers, and myriad other character concepts that require advancement but realistically wouldn't go commit genocide to develop their skills. Just make sure they don't get too much, because it's a less risky path - the tradeoff is that it should be a slower one.

These suggestions might encourage people to play a more diverse array of characters. It would also encourage people like me, who would rather take a nail through the skull than "adventure" up to level 20 again, to make new characters and keep things fresh.

I'm not too keen on the Die Hard path, only for the simple fact that once certain kinds of players learn about it, there's a possibility for griefing to perma-kill, which no one will enjoy.

The other path, however, I like 100% and would endorse. Kind of like, playing a commoner (or at least, a non-adventurer).

Well, for Die Hard, I feel like that risk is acceptable only because taking that path is a choice. There can even be warning text that stipulates that kind of danger. Someone takes that path knowing full-well they have a target on them.

Also, we're implementing a system that has the possibility of leading to permadeath anyways. Some kind of essence-bar type thing. That is also grief-able in the same fashion. If someone knows your bar is low, they might go out of their way to kill you just that one, extra time.

I really like the second option.

Which is something the player taking Die Hard would know in advance. Just because some players don't enjoy certain options doesn't mean the options shouldn't be available for other players.

Honestly though, with the essence system being implemented that feat seems really redundant to me and open to bugs such as lag deaths and such. I'd propose that if it is implemented it instead double or triple your essence hit when killed and/or lower the essence recharge rate.

EDIT: Also, change the name. There's already a DnD feat called Die Hard. Maybe call it Hardcore Badass?

Horray for everyone talking about griefing like we're powerless to stop it.

*Has banned quite a few griefers in the past*

Where exactly do we draw the line at 'griefing'?

The people with the short enough attention span that they would just run in and hit people wouldn't even level here, but insofar I've known, those whose reason for constant, unprovoked PvP amounts to "I'm evil" coupled with token RP with anyone after stabbing them to death, would be allowed.
Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:
"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! You are made of meat and I am very hungry!"

Nobody is really acting like you're powerless to stop griefing, GBX. The comments were only to say that the system gives rise to opportunities for griefers. Not that those griefers cannot be stopped.

I'd suggest an increase in rate of level cap advancement for the Die Hard, as at least for levels 3-8 the limiting factor seems to be how quickly level cap advances. (Usually, by the time a player has logged 24 hours of playtime to increase their cap, the ticker has already ticked up something like half a level)

Second option looks fun as-is. And adventuring would remain the best way to earn gold quickly, so taking part in an occasional group quest or whatever would still be helpful for them.

At the moment, the second option might be strictly superior to the first due to monster difficulty, but as that's addressed in the upcoming update, it will hopefully be just about right.

A little birdie told me level caps are GTFO.
