Say you are changing in/out of your armour and a pack of 1-100,000 of monster X comes around the corner, realism says you stop pick up your weapon and fight in what ever stage of dress your in, if your caught by surprise it says bash the first ones head in with what ever you have in your hands at the moment.
This is exactly what the current system does if you are getting out of your armour and press esc. Only when putting it back on it doesn't apply. In 95% of the cases where that's any trouble, someone in your group must have been stupid enough to initiate combat before you were ready.

Even though many players say in the forums "I wait for the non EK's types to re-equip their armour" or "I wait for people to zone/re-log" in practice for each one who says that there is at least one who's already disappearing over the hill by the time you are ready.
Plenty of reason to ICly get pissed off at them and leave them to their own resources, I'd say. Nothing wrong with discouraging others going go-go-go-grind as fast as they can if it's detrimental to your safety.

Or you are resting and the server spontaneously creates a spawn, or one of your party members trips it by moving just one pixel to far in the wrong direction, or another person not having anything to do with your party trips the spawn.

It applies if you are putting it on or taking it off, it applies if its armour, or cloths. Either way, the system it is not remotely a reflection of reality. Reality is beating them with your breast plate, or sword if you have time to pick it up. Not forgetting all the lesser restoration and cure disease bypasses to leaving your armour on and resting anyway.

Well get rid of the 10 min. rest timer so the caster that they bail on can take away all the buffs that they were content to stand around for, but not content enough to wait for when it comes time to them buffing themselves, or getting their own armour on.

It does not apply if you're taking it off. Because if you press escape while taking your armour off, it automatically puts it back on (with the penalty).

I wish we had some means of dismissing active spells without needing to rest, but that'd be tedious to code..
