People aren't losing characters. Sundren has barely been up for a week in beta. The losses will be gear and gold only, there is nothing stopping people from remaking the character and simply having the same ties and relationships as before.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

There hasn't been months, there's been little more than two weeks of testing.

I am iin general against wipes unless there is something seriously unbalancing the server in terms of powerlevel or character type. I feel that it serves a destructive purpose rather than a constructive one, forcing people to unnecessarily start over and causing them to lose their accomplishments to date. I also feel that it would be highly disruptive to the player base in general, and should therefore be avoided.

Well, if the wipe is going to be like, say 5 months from now, then our chars power will drasticly go down, and that will be hard to roleplay.

That is the reason we want to wipe.

Also, the wipe isn't going to be months. Our beta todo list is not very long at all. Perhaps this is why people are worried about a wipe, because they feel this is like an MMO beta. We're basically trying to just get things as we want them for final "Alright, no wipes or major changes after this point unless it's additional content". That's when we end the beta.

After playing sundren, you can feel the parts that are very incomplete, for example, where is the main city? So we can't very well declare beta over. (Hopefully fixed now) People logging in dead? That's beta issues. Someone managed to get a +5 Full Plate? Again, beta issues. Loot tables incomplete? Beta issues.

These are the things we want corrected first. Do you really think it'll take us 5 months or even 1 month to complete things like that? Now, I do admit, having a low count of DM's right now is making my work progress slowly as I have to balance watching the server and scripting/coding, but we're working on that too.

                Regarding the wipe.

My only concern is people will put effort into developing their characters, only to have to completely redo it. I think if the playerbase is told decisively that there will be a wipe on day 'XX', this will allow us to perhaps not invest as much time/effort in something only to see it go poof once beta is complete.

I think also, that if massive levelling/powergaming/"lack of rp" is the reason to wipe, it would be far more effective to just punish/wipe those individuals, and allow those who have continuously built on their characters RP to continue to build on that RP that began on Day 1 of Beta. I for one have always believed that wiping in an RP environment is hard to overcome as a player, because of the devotion to becoming said character ICly. What I mean is if there will be a wipe, it would be hard for me to play the same character over once the PW goes live.

That said, after playing Sundren, and experiencing the RP of others, I am here to stay, wipe or no wipe. My hat is off to the team here, everything looks amazing

The problem is we can't just "weed out the violators". It's nowhere near that simple, in fact it's almost impossible to figure out who used an exploit in the server and who didn't. It's like trying to find out who stole your bike, it just isn't going to happen.

Well certainly then, if you folks (who are privy to far more then we are) are of the opinion that a wipe is best for the PW, then by all means! My only issues with it are from a RP continuity standpoint, at least for myself.

Perhaps to help the RP community out...the DM's and writing staff could devise some story-based event to explain WHY characters are being wiped (and in a sense, put back to level 3). I know it would be hard, but it would probably help many of the roleplayers be able to keep their character concepts and alliances in tact.

You all got level drained by a ravenous horde of Level Devourers, which are distant genetic by products of intellect devourers, otherwise known as DM's.

We'll see what the writers decide though <_< >_>

Also started at lvl 4. Cant see why some lack of skill would turn the rp upside down. A wipe at an early stage is no problem. I see it more as a chance to try different characters before the real run. Who do I want to play in this world?

The gates to the Eye of Chaos opened and the warp boiled through into realspace caressing the valley of Sundren with a long, black, tendril of pure chaos and reverted the entire biological mass of the area back to it's state just two months ago... After invading the... time... wait... crap my brain is in 40k mode... Maybe it would work if I referenced Planescape instead of 40k...

We could have the Eldar open a rift and suck the levels out that way?
