  • Clairaudience/Clairvoyance

As a first time wizard on an rp server i have been considering this spell for awhile now and how it could fit into roleplay beyond the spell description ingame. Mainly i'm looking for approved methods to find some rp angles to add some more creative fun to different situations.
Firstly, the meanings of the words themselves.

    Clairaudience;
    1. The power to hear sounds said to exist beyond the reach of ordinary experience or capacity, as the voices of the dead.

    2. The supposed power to hear things outside the range of normal perception.

So is this the spell that is used to speak with someone that has died recently?
Example; A wandering mage comes across a fresh dead body of an adventurer. Not able to raise him, the mage casts the spell in order to find out what happened..
Could this same spell be used like a psychic in order to commune with Little Sally's long dead Grandma?
What if, for ingame purposes. This spell could be used (while a dm is around or something) to commune with a being on a higher or lower plane of existence? (not a god just some super special dude or dudette)
What about definition #2...Could this spell be used to increase the range that someone might be able to listen in on a conversation? Perhaps it could even be used to hear a conversation thru a door or window that might normally not be possible?

    Clairvoyance;
1.The supernatural power of seeing objects or actions removed in space or time from natural viewing.
2.Quick, intuitive knowledge of things and people; sagacity.

The supernatural power of seeing objects or actions...so in this case lets say someone is given an item. After casting this spell the caster could determine a part of that items past or future..maybe who would own it...something about that items current owner.
Or even see into the very nature of the item itself (excluding magic items as we already have an identify spell ingame for that) what if said item were cursed, or had some extra planar being attached to it, as an example.
Perhaps another item was present during a terribly emotional event and that can be seen by the caster holding the item. Would these things be an acceptable use of the spell in some cases?
Now regarding knowledge of people...little Timmy is lost in a well and his parents are deeply worried. They havent seen him in half a day now so they run to the local "whatcha-ma-call-it" for advice, bringing along his shirt. He casts the spell on the shirt and can glean some bits of information about poor little Timmy's situation. Maybe the shirt isn't needed, just personal knowledge about the subject by the caster?

So anyway, thats about all i can come up with for now. What do you guys think about this?

    [Clairaudience/Clairvoyance]
    Divination (Scrying)
    Level: Brd 3, Knowledge 3, Sor/Wiz 3
    Components: V, S, F/DF
    Casting Time: 10 minutes
    Range: Long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
    Effect: Magical sensor
    Duration: 1 min./level (D)
    Saving Throw: None
    Spell Resistance: No

Clairaudience/clairvoyance creates an invisible magical sensor at a specific location that enables you to hear or see (your choice) almost as if you were there. You don?t need line of sight or line of effect, but the locale must be known?a place familiar to you or an obvious one. Once you have selected the locale, the sensor doesn?t move, but you can rotate it in all directions to view the area as desired. Unlike other scrying spells, this spell does not allow magically or supernaturally enhanced senses to work through it. If the chosen locale is magically dark, you see nothing. If it is naturally pitch black, you can see in a 10-foot radius around the center of the spell?s effect. Clairaudience/clairvoyance functions only on the plane of existence you are currently occupying.

Arcane Focus: A small horn (for hearing) or a glass eye (for seeing).
This is the actual spell description taken from the Player's Handbook v3.5. You're free to use the spell in this sense. However, making the spell actually grant the user with the ability to do some of those things is fairly high level. Legend Lore comes to mind, though there's tons of other spells available that can do what you're talking about.

That's Speak with Dead and is the exclusive realm of priests

The way the spell is implemented in NWN2, it is an enhancement spell to your senses. I'm not sure how you can play that off like the D&D spell or speaking with the dead...
Heh, i guess my characters are deleted, now. Updating char list soon!

You can always ask a DM if you are able to speak to a dead person with the spell if you find yourself in events. I for one allow detection and scrying and crap in events. Simply use some divination spell placeholder and then tell me "I'm casting this to represent scrying or divining or something" I will then lookup info I'm looking for and say "Proceed and roll spellcraft".

I'm big on the spellcraft skill

I clarified the exact spell description, the problem with allowing a single spell to do so many things is that you'll quickly find level six mages doing more than they should logically be able to at their level.

Just saying, you can use other spells that accomplish the same sort of effects. I'll post them in a short while, maybe.

Whoops thats my fault for not really being clear Ethereal. I didnt mean to claim that i meant it could do all those things, i was mostly just asking about the nature of the way in which would be an acceptable roleplaying use of the spell. Based mainly on the definitions i understood those words to mean. (i dont own many DnD books)
Really, i had an idea in mind for the upcoming festival that Kai was going to be organizing. i was sort of hoping to be able to use this spell in order to justify my sudden ability to give "Psychic" readings at it.

There are probably a bunch of spells you could still use for that, from Divinations to Illusions. It just depends on what do you want to do exactly
