To me, placing a scorpion in his bed so that he could get poisoned doesn't sound too much like the act of a paladin....thats not exactly what you would call "smiting evil"...thats more along the lines of "deception and poisoning them to a slow and painful death".

Using poison like that is an evil act.

Anyhow, from a starting character balance stand point, it is a fine background. I do have one comment to add.

A PC that is the son of a king probably requires DM moderation. We can have little lordlings or characters born to noble lines ("I'm the fifth son of Baron So-and-So from Tethyr"), but an unregulated prince might be over the top, depending on the circumstance.

Paladins, the most misunderstood base class in all of DnD.
PC - Corwin Eska'las (Sun Elf pursuing the dream of becoming a Bladesinger)

Alt PC - Brevin Smoothands (meticulously groomed half orc bard swashbuckler... sort of... sings great, less fighting)

Yea that definetly would not be a lawful good act. A lawful good character will stop evil, but only within the limits of the law, and poisoning someone in their sleep is not considered a lawful act. MAYBE a Chaotic Good..but I would say that's more along the lines of neutral evil.

Anyway, the alignment of your character isn't soley based on one act.

I suppose the point you're getting at is that his prince-hood is merely part of his background and has no impact-ingame?

Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man."
