Some RP that starts out as a joke (and i def think there's plenty of room for humor IC) can get overly silly, but I suppose that's personal opinion on when that point is reached.
As for modern day slang terms like chicks and such, I try not to use these as best I can, but they slip out sometimes. I mean, I've said things like "I was walking up that hill and got jumped by a band of drow". Well, I have no idea when the term "jumped" was coined to mean being ambushed and I'm not about to get a book on Old English and study up on it.
Of course, I'm disciplined enough not to start saying "Dude, you're weapon is dope. I bet you could shred something fierce with it!" either.
I guess it doesn't bother me as long as it's not over the top. There's only such much time in my life to put into this game.

Breaking the fourth wall - sometimes, SOMETIMES, I think it can be done subtlely and be effective/fun, but in a RP setting it generally breaks immersion.

Alt PC - Brevin Smoothands (meticulously groomed half orc bard swashbuckler... sort of... sings great, less fighting)

Meh, don't be so uptight, sometimes you need a break from the serious roleplaying in order to have some fun aswell or you as a player will get all grumpy and irritated. At least I do

Fear is a healthy factor in roleplay, in my opinion. Naturally, a character does not need to be afraid of everything under the sun, but having some real fears that show when the RP is appropriate is a good thing. It makes for a very good plot/storytelling device that can certainly make a line of RP very fun.

This is a very interesting thread. I've thought a lot about some of my character's interactions with overwhelming odds. I think he's showed just the right amount of fear for a dwarf. Opting to run away from hordes of undead... backing off from a goblin cave after scores of goblins came running out the entrance... He doesn't piss his pants, but he knows when the odds "should" be against him and turns back.

More evil characters, player factional violence, and more difficult monsters and I think people won't be able to hide their fear

Funny I would think dwarves are the least fearful of all the races. At least that is the impression i get from reading numerous FR and DragonLance books. When others would run away, they wade right in and bash with their axes fearlessly almost all of the time, no matter what the odds are. No one race is as hardy as the dwarven race...I would think this "fear" pretty much applies to most of the races *except* dwarves. To be perfectly honest I have never met a fearful dwarf...I wouldn't even know how one acts or behaves. I think it would be odd for me to see one. Just my 2 cents.

All I know is that my Bard is running the happy hell away from anything if he's alone. If he's with someone, then alls a different story...until said person dies, then its back to option A.

Okk im just curious (and I saw someone already make mention of it), but how would someone, say a Paladin, who is immune to fear, RP that? Ive done alot of RPing in my time, and I would call myself a decent RPer, but im just curious as to how people would go about RPing the immunity to fear?

You are never afraid, even staring at the face of death. You always look to your god, or code for support, even at the most dissmal times...

I've played ALOT of paladins, PnP and NWN. So if anyone needs RP tips, ask me.

Ive played Paladins before, just on different servers, where I had plenty of influence and backup to ensure I could be fearless as I wanted.. but here Solaris is just one guy with a sword, and his God is his only support at the moment. Not sure how the DMs would view my one man "army" (cough) facing up to a couple of skeletons and calling them ragged bags of bones walking on nice green grass they have no right to be touching. Sorta thing. :P

Note that paladins have diplomacy as a class skill and charisma/wisdom as class stats, so in general, they're not that dense. Tactical retreat and caution are always options.
