Sometimes, it helps me to think of alignment this way: Its not a expression of your own morals and ethics, but it is a indicator of how the establishment that is the "law of the land" would view you and your talents.
Sure an assassin could only go after evil dictators and such. But then the establishment wouldn't call them an assassin would they? Maybe something like Black Flame Zealot, or Harper, or Paladin.
Why are Bard's deemed not lawful? Perhaps the establishment sees their outspoken ways (song, stories, plays, etc) as someone vocally broadcasting their own opinions on matters. (Be they opinions on art, versions of history, current events, whatever.) Bards do say a lot. I think we can all agree that a brooding quiet bard... doesn't really fit the class description to well. (How would you explain them inspiring people like that?) I have looked and I don't see anything in Sundren granting people Freedom of Speech.
This is not the rules, this is how I help acclimate myself to the forced alignment. Again it is not how I see myself, nor how I act. Its how the establishment would see me if I was standing before them in a court of law.
Heres my current example:
My CN Barbarian/Favored Soul, values loyalty and courage above all over. His whole life revolves around those two aspects. That would make him more LG then CN, but because his loyalty is to his tribe who is NOT the establishment of Sundren, and his definition of courage is not the same as most paladins out there, He would be seen as CN by the rulers of Sundren.
It really does help. I encourage you to apply this to your thoughts on assassins and such.
