  • "Slow down you move too fast...

...you got to make the moment last"

So sang Simon & Garfunkel and leads me neatly into my topic.

I've had some excellent little RP encounters recently and one of the key elements was just taking our time.

Quite often I find this is ignored/forgotten, especially when fighting critters and the party is rushing off to club the next Orc or open the next chest. At this point I am normally either desperately trying to bash out some dialogue or deleting it as the others disappear over the horizon. I generally try and allow others reasonable typing time before concluding that they aren't going to speak and move things on.

I can understand that some people aren't interested in/don't have time to stand around chopsing all day but I think I would rather have them say it (ie "Its not safe to stand around here talking" or "For the love of God shut up you stupid Gnome" etc) than soundlessly running around slicing things up.

Its worth remembering that RP doesn't begin and end at congregation areas. Sometimes it feels like all the effort goes into creating a pretext for going into the baddies lair and little into the adventure once there.

Oh I'm not trying bashing anyone's style here by the way.

You'll find it's hard to stop the grind-machine with mere words.

That's become one of my complaints as late as well, too much MMO-style grinding, not enough RPing. Granted the only way to get exp right now is to grind, but at least have a reason for it all... don't just say "I was walking through the forest and these gnolls needed killing!"

However, that seems to be the state of things at the moment.

Always a point thats worth reminding folks of, if theyre interested.
I started a small event the other day that was over before it began, due to the spokeperson of a group of gnolls being slaughtered immediately after he asked for a trading of words concerning the ransom of a human girl. Needless to say, one gnoll got away... dead ransomee (that a word?) Very short event. Not a complaint on my part at all, players cant be the winners all the time.

I didnt even know that bit had happened!!

Thought it strange you would throw a dead girl into the gnoll stronghold without something else going on

There were a few overly enthusiatic players that I grouped with yesterday, but for the most part I encountered excellent RPers who were more than happy to take it slow. A particular shout out to the halfling brothers, Nook and...? I can't recall the other name at the moment.

Also, a paladin of Kelemvor by the name of Sane, and a priestess of Sune who had a lengthy name that escapes me.

Even without a DM, take it slow... some of us might want to actually talk to you!

              Cheers to this thread

I love hearing this, and whole heartedly agree.

I love seeing the RP encompass all aspects of the game play. Where else do you learn ones true character but under stress.

Being able to express ones self while out *cough* *cough* adventuring is a great way to build a characters personae, so yes slow down, and give me a chance to show you how mucked up my girl really is.

I also believe this allows for more intelligent RPing, slowing down, thinking, and then of course getting it wrong, and expiring horribly!

I really have gotten quite annoyed as well.

Alot of the groups just want to rush ahead, not RP at all, and get as much as XP as possible. This bores me, unfortunately. I've left one or two groups simply because this reason, when all a person wants to do is kill. I've got to say, however, i've ran into excellent RP as well, especially Sparkeh's char, if your the one playing the gnome searching for the Glowing Root ^^

Tactically if the group has some one running at full speed it quickly is not a group.

A rule I taught elsewhere was "groups move at 2/3 speed". Or here that would be mostly walking

My ranger for example slows to a walk when "tracking" and gee... I can tell you when you are about to get gooned by 12 things at once if you rush up. If you dont walk the info isnt going to be there in time.

Tactically groups can have look outs as well. They need to move faster than the main body. Namely.. the group's center moves at a walk or 2/3 while the scout runs back and forth. If you all run there is no room between the scout and the main group.

                  And yes....

For RP purposes if the group is at a a walk someone taking time to type can then use "run" mode to catch up while getting off their text.

of.. and before I forget ... on DM quests walk mode gives time for the DM to setup complex things. Rushing kills any chance for big setups.

Rushing ahead makes you miss out on so many things...

Today Roger got offered 500 coins to spend a night with Rook, whom he only knew of reputation! Isn't that jolly great!?! XD

Me too, especially if the group is talking ooc about where they are in range to get xp or not. Thats a good cue to move one.

Heh yeah that was me. That little session is exactly the kind of thing I am talking about. In 'adventuring' terms we didn't exactly achieve much apart from a lot of chatting and goofing around and me getting too beat up to make it past lv1 of the Spittlefist Caves. Most groups would rest, rebuff and charge on. But Rping it out was great and worth more to me than the xp we would have got for carrying on.
