I've had some excellent little RP encounters recently and one of the key elements was just taking our time.
Quite often I find this is ignored/forgotten, especially when fighting critters and the party is rushing off to club the next Orc or open the next chest. At this point I am normally either desperately trying to bash out some dialogue or deleting it as the others disappear over the horizon. I generally try and allow others reasonable typing time before concluding that they aren't going to speak and move things on.
I can understand that some people aren't interested in/don't have time to stand around chopsing all day but I think I would rather have them say it (ie "Its not safe to stand around here talking" or "For the love of God shut up you stupid Gnome" etc) than soundlessly running around slicing things up.
Its worth remembering that RP doesn't begin and end at congregation areas. Sometimes it feels like all the effort goes into creating a pretext for going into the baddies lair and little into the adventure once there.
