Blackguards... does anyone have any useful links or info on them, the origins of their powers etc? The Aux Intelligence Service seems lacking in this.

Blackguards are sponsored by an Evil outsider. To become a blackguard you have to make peaceful contact with an evil outsider. Alot of people tend to think of them as paladins, but a paladin gets their power from a god, and Blackguards can get it from an Imp in all technicality
As such a blackguard could technically worship any god they want and still be a blackguard.
In P&P blackguards end up with a spellbook very comparable to the paladins, but obviously opposite spells. Like Paladins get Holy Sword spells, Blackguards get evil sword spells. Blackguards also get a fiendish servant at higher levels (which is a dumb rat in NWN2) but in P&P can be many different things. I believe a fiendish horse (Black Knight Style) is even one you can pick from.
Oh, and Fallen Paladins get huge bonuses when they become blackguards in P&P.

Hmm.. okay so
Sylloven has saaay ... +10 charisma.... becomes a paladin... falls and becomes a blackguard...
She ends up having 35+ saves in each category and eats babies.
*NOTE: A 1 is still auto failure.
POWERGAME!! raahahah!
Sadly I don't think even Hans could get Syl to play L/G.
Wouldn't you lose those paladin levels though? Fighter instead? I'm often confused.

In sundren you lose paladin levels. In P&P you trade them in for blackguard levels and you get bonuses depending on how many paladin levels you have.Originally posted by deepshades View PostHmm.. okay so

Ahh it all makes good sense now.
Too bad I'm too lazy to ninja 2 paladin levels just for the saves... although judging from what I'm hearing about diseases and crap It might not be a bad idea to go for that Divine health..
oh crap I wasn't metagaming my character development out loud just now was I?

Well depending on how dms here make it, in PnP you dont just "poof" paladin. Paladin is someone who knows that they want to be one for a long time and will spend their life devoted to its duitys. Obvisouly situations can F with the pallys code and morals and turn him to Blackguard/Anti paladin what have you.
From the little booklet: A blackguard epotomizes evil. He is nothing short of a mortal fiend, a black knight with the foulest sort of reputation. A blackguard is an evil villain of the first order, equilavent in power to the rightious paladin, but devoted to powers of darkness. No one class makes the best blackguard -all that is required is a willingness to serve the forces of darkness.
As GBX said, they also make contact with a devil/demon to get their power but can also serve a evil god. Like Jim makes contact with Bob the devil. Bob goes sure, ill give you powers of darkness if you use them well. Jim happens to be LE so it would be in his best intrest to use the dark powers allying himself and following Bane. All connectsSacrifice everything as the final darkness falls... in the end, all that awaits you is death. Only then will you understand - you've been following in my footsteps all along.
So come then, you heroes! Come in all your power and glory! For in the final hour, all must serve the one... true... king.

Well, the prequisite is outsider contact if you read the technical readout. So even a paladin, I believe, has to make the contact. Blackguards are scions of darkness. They are the chosen holy warriors of the dark gods, akin in some ways to paladins, although without the paladin's natural restrictions on behavior - however, each deity may impose his/her own restrictions on his/her champions.
Blackguards in Faerun derive their power from their chosen deity (unless Godbeast changed that) but they do need to make peaceful contact with an evil outsider - This doesn't necessarily mean a pact, but it often does.
Blackguards utilize any methods to achieve their goals - trickery and deceit, raw overwhelming force, undead, demons, even alliances with goodly people when necessary (see the aforementioned trickery and deceit).
They are dark, evil people - truly twisted. These aren't just evil fighters. They WANT to cause pain. They WANT others to suffer. They WANT the power that they get from what they do. They like it.
Blackguards are to evil what paladins and Holy Liberators are to Good.- Hrogash - The Invincible Avatar of Gruumsh, Soon to be LORD OF ALL THAT EXISTS, BOW DOWN TO HROGASH FOR HROGASH IS MIGHTY!
