As a DM I am privy to the inner character designs since I can read entire character sheets. I can say that not all drow are "Good" drow. Just not "Drow" Drow. I did see one who was a "Drow" Drow.
Personally, I think Drow are weaker than all the other races. I watched 3 Humans and a Drow enter Sharahan hills. One rock hit the drow and it fell down dying... over and over.
Where as the Humans were fine. When the Humans are level 20, the Drow will be ... what, 17? 2 - 3 levels is alot worse for a character than the few small bonuses the race gets.
Honestly, I think people just play Drow for the look more than for the Bonuses. If we let everyone be vampires, it'd be the same thing. I could have scripts in to melt them outdoors in the sun. I could have scripts in for blood need, etc. Tons of hinderances, and people would still want to be them
As for the topic, I pretty much have NPC's distrust them implicitly. I know PC's who also distrust them and get shunned for it, which is surprising.
