FTFY per the Defenders of the Faith, A Guidebook to Clerics and Paladins. Circumstances can allow for a paladin to associate with an evil character on a temporary basis if the need is great enough. There is also a risk of personal corruption in doing so.

Regarding the Paladin Code. The base line paladin code should really be established by the DM's in any given setting. There are certain base line activites every paladin should be exected to abide by such as not lying, not cheating, not stealing, not knowingly continually associating with evil. Beyond that baseline every PC will have their own personal code of conduct.

And you have to undergo the Atonement spell several times.

Let us not rehash this particular argument here too much, as all actions are due their positive or negative consequence, so is the individual Paladin subject to consequence based on the 'DM' interpretation and discretion.

In regard to the instance I am referring to, the involved parties have been contacted as per the IC need and the remaining player will contact a DM for resolution when time allows. This will further establish the aforementioned baseline should there be any remaining question.

Perhaps a universal set of guidelines to playing paladins of particular religions should be created to be used by the Sundren community.

Regardless, there ARE a core set of beliefs that ALL paladins must follow. The difference between religious orders and deities is more a matter of how to interpret those views.

Lathanderites for example are similar to Tormtar typical Paladins, with more emphasis on good. They journey around, helping everyone they can... They'd just as soon stop to help a small town with a bandit problem as they would journey to a distant city to investigate a rumor of some evil tyrant.

Helmites, will kill the bad guy. And would happily lose their powers if it meant serving good. Since they aren't at all concerned with being 'paragon' paladins, they often do lose their powers. But atonements are easily bought in a Helmite church for this reason. BUT; they will still lose their powers for violating their code, and if they prove themselves to be problem cases that aren't at all fulfilling their roles as Paladins, then the atonements will simply stop coming.

Basic rule on Sundren so far as I'm aware; Follow the Paladin Code, then think about your dogma and character personality. Depending on your characters history, association with his/her church, etc. A DM will then determine whether or not you should fall and the condition of your atonement if so.

This is really simple guys and gals. Don't use skills like this to WIN. That is NOT the point. Think before you act. Could you benefit from keeping the knowlege quiet? Could the story where you confront this EVIL take place at another time when a DM is not running an event?

I will cite a short example where a paladin and an assassin became respected companions. The pally could have blasted a Detect Evil and then a PVP would have ensued. The 3 months of meaningful RP would have been reduced to who had the biggest piss-stick at the time.

The post was spot on "Think Twice"

Do I need to pull out more? I can.

***before anyone gets all twisted up, let me state: No body did anything WRONG per say. I just think if the story is considered before this silly idea of winning, we will all benefit.***
