  • Do you roleplay shock at the really horrible spells?

I was curious about this one.

Many of the spells in NWN2 (even more in DnD, but let's stick to the ones in-game), are really horrible to witness if you imagine it. I'm not just talking about summoning undead or demons: the list of spells that sound like they are straight out of a horror film are numerous.

Let's start with potentially the worst, Avasculate. This is a spell by which you forcibly rip a bunch of blood vessels from the target's body, thread them into organic rope, and strangle them with it.

Horrid Wilting is a fun one, particularly if it kills someone. It rapidly drains all the moisture out of opponent's bodies, turning them from fleshy meatbags to shriveled-up husks, instantly.

"Holy crap, that wizard is casting Horrid Wilting!"

I don't know about you, but I'd be nervous around someone who employed such magic without a second thought.

I generally dismember whoever cast it to the best of my ability, or run in terror if I don't have any handy scrolls of spell mantle.
Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:
"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! You are made of meat and I am very hungry!"

As one of the people likely casting those spells, I generally have a detached indifference to the gruesome effects, focusing on the final results. The spell effects don't properly convey the brutality of the some of the [Evil] descriptor spells, so a lot of people that aren't familiar with what they do probably don't even know what they're seeing in-game and thus don't roleplay as they otherwise would. And, unless it's a pretty slow-paced player versus player situation, the spellcaster in question likely isn't going to take the time to emote-decribe what each spell is doing to it's target.

There is, however, one spell that gives you a good idea of what is going on and I really like it for that effect - Wrathful Castigation. Anything struck by it, player or NPC, begins to emote *Writhes in pain and screams in agony* every round of the duration until it finally dies. When you see that, you can't help but know that something pretty horrible is happening to that person/npc.

Tyler Penleigh - Obligatory author insert, Red Blade Defender, sarcastic jerk, caring brother, loving fiancé, war criminal.

      Retired/Dead
Eirimil Gaelazair (Dead)- Bitter. Caustic. Abrasive. Egocentric. Probably right. Found dead in the burned-out Viridale forest a few weeks after the survivors were able to sweep the area after the Bloodmaim offensive. Aside from his usual attire, an intricate music box was the only thing in his possession.

I think most seasoned adventurers would become desensitized to gruesome deaths. Some of the dungeons have impaled heads, impaled corpses, hanged men, and people killed in many horrible ways with their body parys scattered all over. And that's probably about only 5% of the stuff they see. The other 95% of the stuff was probably caused by the adventurer himself and his party members. I mean Kyle alone has probably killed tens of thousands of stuff in different ways with just the sword(lightening/fire/cold/etc enchanted). And it doesnt help the players imagination when the spells lacks the detsiled visual effects that would make them awe in its horribleness.

But then you're saying that all the adventurers in Sundren are vicious killers, without a shred of moral conscience or value for human life.

                    ....Oh, wait.

Apparently you haven't met many Paladins, then.

Should have been around in the crusades. Now that was messy!
