  • Faction recruitment - I want to sign up

I have attempted, but failed, to convince various friends that Sundren is a good place to RP. I still strongly believe Sundren is a good place to RP. Thus I want to give the server a serious attempt - but will have to go solo in terms of real world contacts.

My problem is that I have a couple characters at or around 6th lvl, but now I don't really know what to do with them because I am not aligned with any faction or group. I don't even know what places to grind beyond 6th even if I just wanted to solo-grind (which I don't find particularly appealing).

I have tried to RP and find a hook, but mostly I've found either (a) high lvl characters going about their own plots, or (b) a bunch of people hanging about a campfire discussing random nonsense. You try to RP with them, and they give you some good RP responses, but mostly it is to show off their character's various quirks, and not necessarily trying to pull anyone into any kind of larger plot. I guess I'm having a hard time "breaking in" because I don't have (m)any connections. I also don't have infinite time to wander about the server hoping that some group will happen to want to recruit me.

So maybe the thing to do is join a faction. Who's recruiting? I like to play mage-hybrids, but I don't find the Red Wizards appealing to my RP ideas. Mages are doubly difficult in terms of breaking in because they can't solo well. Are any factions out there, with active participation, looking for mages? I'd be willing to make a char from scratch to fill a niche.

I suppose my ideal would be to find a group that is relatively active, tries to meet on particular day(s) at particular time(s) (so I can set aside the time), and one that likes RP-ers over solo-ers/power-builders.

Summary: I think this server has serious potential, but don't have the time to play like its WOW 5 hours a day every day. I want to join a group and get in on a plot, but don't know how. Factions seem like the obvious way to go, who's recruiting?

Currently I'm using a dwarf, and may start a halfling. Thanks.

If you enjoy playing casters, and don't want to join the Thayans, I would recommend joining the Hands of Mundus.

Legion also accepts wizards, most factions for that matter can accommodate for an arcane or divine spellcaster. It's more about having your characters motives and motivations inline with the factions then it is about playing the correct class.

You infact could make a wizard who firmly believes in the teachings of Tyr's justice say, and join the arbiters alliance as a member of the Triad faction. As an example.

      Kyoko - Tiefling Diviner
      Yashedeus - Cyrist Warlock
      Aramil - Nutter

If you ever see my name on the server dont be hesitant to drag me away from my talking nonesense at the campfire. Its a practise I abhore as much as the next person.
The dwarven custom feats go along way towards making it slightly more entertaining to fight - particularly as a character with low hit dice - rogues, bards, wizards e.t.c.

Also dont be summoning undead; trust me you'd be suprised how narky people get about your choice of summoned companion!
How all these Palemasters and Masters of Shrouds go about their daily lives without uses undead minions baffles me! I cant seem to go to the most secluded part of the server and not find someone to chastise me about the laws against necromancy in sundren

Really? I haven't met a single PC in-game since the creation of like.. maybe three different characters who didn't give two turds that I animated a corpse right in front of them.

Hell, I rolled around in Banite armor in public for probably a good month or so before Lothior's (sp?) PC Jonathan gave me a whoopin'. If anything, good characters probably need to crack down on that sort of thing.

            Hi, mrgrey,
Look for Tery Mard. The Corps de Grace is actively recruiting.

OOC - Read about us in the wiki (http://www.sundren.org/wiki/index.ph...Corps_de_Grace) so that you can make an informed decision.
You can look Tery up in-game or PM me and we can set up a meet.

PS: Re Necromancy: The Corps just had a resignation because it objected to a member consorting with a necromancer.

Did I say necromancy? I meant cakebaking.

People been summoning undead and not recieving a falchion to the face preceding impalement on a spear and throwing at a mountain?

Wow, I need to roll around some more.
Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:
"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! You are made of meat and I am very hungry!"

Suggestion. I ran for a long time on a low population server. Really good RP atmosphere there too, trouble is we were spread all over the bloody globe. There was about 13 of us total and about 5 of us on at any time most of the time.

We used to organize, with the DM's, group sessions. My suggestion would be to worry less about the faction you're in in character and more about finding like scheduled players who might be interested in creating a group of PC's to roll with each other. Just my two cents. As much as I do actually like the sporadic nature of things (because it seems real that way) it makes sense to organize a group OOC as well just to get the ball rolling. See if you can find some players who are on at whatever o'clock on whatever Pagangodsday of the week preferably every week.

The DM's themselves are more interested in interacting with grouped players (I imagine the 3-5 people size to be ideal - at least if I was a DM that's the groups I'd be looking for) too so it makes sense on all grounds really.

I would say chose which side you want to support, good or evil and go from there. There is a core of evil and good players and many in between.

Actually, the only factioned char I have is in the Corps (6th lvl), but when I was more active many months ago I never saw anyone on who are in it so I gave up. Could be just my bad timing. Well, for that matter, I don't know who is really in it except a Bard leader who's name I have forgotten.

I don't think I really understand how the factions work - if I have a char in the Corps does that mean I have automatically chosen "good"? And thus I can't go evil? I think somewhere I read that you can only be in one faction forum, but I'm not sure how you choose which one you are on. Does joining a faction = now in that forum? I understand the purpose is to stop metagaming, which makes sense to me.

I don't mind the Corps, as long as I can find (and play) the times that the faction meets. As a seasoned PnP DM, I am open to many different roles, I just want to get involved in *something*.

I realize I appear to know little, but I haven't been on the server for a while, have forgotten much, and am just getting back into it. What should I go read to refresh myself?

DF - I'll look for you with my factioned char.

Skullcleaver's/Whurest are recruiting... Dwarves that is. You are sure to find a meat shield among them as well. Many of us have low level alts and are more than eager to play them. Look for myself or Kuscotopia or DeepRealm or Chupacabra. Or any dwarf sounding name and send us a tell.

                            *note to veterans*
(disclaimer most everyone I encounter already does this, but it seems there are a few bad apples)

I have heard a few newer folks complain about the lack of INs. It is our responsibility as players to help out the newer folks. If there is one thing I despise, it is upper level veterans who think their shite don't stink. If we all go out of our way to help others the server will benefit.

                            *rant end*

I'd say if you want to be part of something really active and easy to roll with on a roleplay level, I'd suggest looking into either the Sundren Legion branches (the Legion proper, the Hands of Mundus, or the Red Blades) or one of the Black Hand factions (Bane/Myrkul/Bhaal/some vampire dude). That's the recognizable 'good' vs. 'evil' spectrum, but it's not really that clear-cut. In addition, it gives you a lot of room to interact with people in a way more immersive to the setting - ie: as a Legionnaire, you may be out patrolling and generally trying to keep the peace or as a (secret or open) member of the Black Hand, you might be trying to put their interests into places of power.

If Lawful doesn't suit you you could always go for the 'patriot' Veritas (because who doesn't like Chaotic Good terrorists?) There's the Thayans and Exigo if you're looking for a more political or economic game, since their agendas are on the mercantile end. Blackwood is the definable 'neutral mercenary' guild. Factions are more or less a way to give yourself a 'hook' for what you want to work towards, and gives the DMs a way to interact with you without resorting to 'act of god'ing you some random quests.

Reinamar Stormseeker - The bladestorm that must turn back the wind. Arkerym of The People, practitioner of the forgotten art, pariah.

Tyler Penleigh - Obligatory author insert, Red Blade Defender, sarcastic jerk, caring brother, loving fiancé, war criminal.

                              Retired/Dead
Eirimil Gaelazair (Dead)- Bitter. Caustic. Abrasive. Egocentric. Probably right. Found dead in the burned-out Viridale forest a few weeks after the survivors were able to sweep the area after the Bloodmaim offensive. Aside from his usual attire, an intricate music box was the only thing in his possession.
