From what I've seen we're pretty balanced on the whole good/evil scale at the moment.

Anyway, good/evil is boring and filmed in low-def dull-o-vision.

Get yourself in on some law/chaos goodness, or even better - personality conflicts rather than alignment ones (bring on the LG v LG wars).

Actually true. The (extremely) Chaotic and (somewhat, if the wholesale bloody slaughter of evil because-it's-evil is considered so) Good Helga has been assaulted by Paladins more than she has necromancers. Meh, she's the same number of steps away from Chaotic Evil than she is from Lawful Good.

Who says all the in-fighting only occurs on Team Evil?

Anyway, as for alignment shifts, the method I always use as a PnP DM is to gradually notice more and more shifting alignments, then try and pull around an event that marks the clear transition of alignment.

Someone who flaunts minor laws constantly won't become Chaotic, but I'll take notice, and sooner or later some kind of event where they have the option of outright disregarding lawfulness for any reason (To save innocents if they're good, to gain for themselves if they're neutral). If they go the path of Chaos, they become chaotic. Inform the player of the shift after that, and they won't really have a leg to stand on when it comes to arguing it.

    'I'm making you chaotic'.
    'But... But I'm Neutral!'
'You just caused a paperwork nightmare for the entire city, broke several laws, and did so mainly on a whim, just to let a few innocent prisoners free.'
    '....Hmm.'
Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:
"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! You are made of meat and I am very hungry!"

"I need evil to smite! Point me in the direction of a worthy foe and I will have at them for the honour of fair maidens everywhere!" Shouted the drunken knight, waving his empty flagon as he stumbled into other patrons.

"Well you know my dear, there is a nest of Vampires out there, a host of Banites, assassins, giants, brigands, shades, an impotent government and blood thirsty orcs to smite. All at our very doorstep." Said the buxom barmaid as she refreshed the knights ale.

"Eh? You don't say? All that huh?" The knight sat down in contemplation, the worn bar stool straining under his considerable girth and the weight of his old, unseasoned armour.

"So forest creatures eh? they need saving too? Evil merchants and loggers huh? so how does one get in on that?" said the knight to the ranger next to him, who only flashed a grin in response while quietly smoking his pipe.
Butch: "You know, when I was a kid, I always thought I was gonna grow up to be a hero."
Sundance: "Well it's to late now."

        Toons:
        Mittens Whitepaw (Feral Druid),
        Rose Thimblefoot (Simple Seamstress),
        Melody Mourningsoul (Cursed Bard)
Katalina Zephyr (Guardian of the Grave)
Gabrielle Dumoine (the Duchess of Waterdeep... 'onestly...)
