  • Great Difficulty Partying Up

It looks like I will have to start a new character, my own fault, of course. I'm rather hesitant about that and here are the reasons.

For the last few months (since about last November) I have been finding it extremely difficult to join parties. There are several reasons for this. I tend to play at times when the server is not heavily populated. As well, my gaming time is limited and many times I could find people but after negotiation to eventually form a party, there was not have enough time to actually go and do things. Limited playing time also meant that I watched many of those whom I initially adventured with rise to the point where our levels no longer matched well. That left me relying on the XP trickle.

Early on, I was able to get into parties, but since I got to about level 9 I found it difficult to find parties of a suitable level. I was usually too high for those I could find, but sometimes I was too low. Or I could join a party who's level was so high I got no XP, which doesn't help my character develop. I could either sit at a campfire waiting for people to show up, metagame to try and find people or try soloing, and there were not too many places I could effectively do that.

I have enjoyed Sundren, except for these issues, so I don't want to pack things in, but it's also difficult to contemplate starting a new character if the difficulties persist. It was a long, slow process getting to L12 and I was trying a build (Arcane Trickster) that I don't think really comes together until about level 13 or 14.

I don't want to effectively have to do all my character development below level 11. Nor do I want to play a character who spends all their time sitting around talking to people.

    Does anyone have suggestions?

    Cheers,
    Dave

If you've established an OOC relationship with any players, try to put a group together and only play the PCs in said group when you're playing with each other. This way, no one outpaces anyone else.

I ran into your problem with my main PC, having no one to party with once I hit level 7, and it stayed this way until about level 12. Trickle, trickle, trickle. The problem was solved when two PCs with similar interests to mine reached my slowly advancing level, and then I had an adventuring crew. We transitioned to the high levels at about the same pace, so life was much easier.

My advice to you is to try again, and if you're having trouble finding a group, hit me up. I'll be happy to lend a hand.

Alternatively, you can pay Ramza to follow you around and keep you buffed with his wizard spells. You should be able to survive to 12-14 as any class, with wizard buffs.

This isn't a good solution if you do not like dealing with Red Wizards ICly, or if you just want traditional party smashing for XP.
Ramza Xantheus "...for a meager fee, of course."

What's that to do with the subject?

On the subject, however, I'm not a regular player of Sundren. I initially joined in 2009 en returned just now. I do not know the composition of the server in terms of character, partying and hunting. But one thing you should pay mind to is the core of your character.

I'll explain more precisely by illustrating with an example. When you're character, no matter his alignment, has strong senses and motives, you must play him very keen in those assets. Your character will have difficulty to bind with individuals that do not support or even oppose his motives. A knight can not travel with a person who clearly breaks law, for the knight himself is bound by the Code of Chivalry. Or any other code.

Considering you pay much interest into the composition of a party and fellow adventurers, you might want to choose playing a character that is neutral. I'm not just referring to alignments, that's an other subject, but to the characteristics of your protagonist. It'll allow you to join every sort of party, without having moral restrictions.

No, that would probably be the other guy. I always do *laughs*.

No, my character didn't particularly like Red Wizards. In fact he once totally opposed them. And he was a magic user himself. I was building an Arcane Trickster. And I would prefer that kind of character again.

And I wasn't really looking solely for XP, but relying on the trickle for the most part is pretty boring. I was looking for a balance and not finding it.

Most of my problems were not IC, like you suggest, but with appropriate levels, restricted gaming time (duration) and finding people (time-of-day).

Nevertheless, your advice is good, and thanks for posting it.

I tried a bit of that, but those folks have not been playing much (at all?) in quite a while. Lost a darned good continuing RP that way, too. Do you mean like the "Formation of a Battle Company" thread in the Rumors Forum? I wondered about that. I had the impression that was kind of frowned upon.

That sounds like a great situation, if it can be organized.

Having a 19th level Arcane Trickster I can say one thing... Had she not been a member of the Hands when a DM was playing out many plot advancements on the vampires, she would not be anywhere near 19th level now. As it is I can't do much with her at all except trickle another 30 hours.
