  • Die Lots. What do?

So, since I've not decided to play Easy Mode (That being a Divine Caster or Gish), and I dislike grinding easy enemies for hours along with preferring to take groups on, I appear to be dying.

    Lots.

Is it normal to die so often that I can't actually gain another level?

What are suggestions to avoid this?

Grouping hasn't been successful, since we inevitably get overwhelmed just as much, and I don't like the idea of pinging any Cleric online to get them to come OOC raise me.

So how do most people deal with dying?

I'm level 6 and trying the Mossclaw Meet place. Are there more appropriate places for my level?
Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:
"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! You are made of meat and I am very hungry!"

I had some troubles around that level, but honestly, where you run into trouble will depend on when your build comes together. I died once per level from 5-8, but I haven't died since I dinged 9th (it call came together then). I imagine when you reach your RDD levels, you'll start laughing at the rest of us. In the mean time, do you have any opportunities to increase your AC? Once you get it to around 28, things get alot easier. Even if it costs you some damage, this can be a good move.

I haven't run into this, so maybe it's the groups you're managing to find. And an ooc raise is against the rules, so good plan on avoiding it. Finding a good friend that you're usually with also helps a great deal. Might be harder for Ms. Great-Wyrm, though, given her hertiage.

Have you tried the lizardmen in the sewers or the bandits in the cave near the Gate of the Sunderer (ghosts there, though, which are a pain)?

Level 6 is fine for that area. try to avoid the Mossclaw Village and Grimaxe hold though, unless you have a large, capable party.

Perhaps strategic approaches can increase your survivability. Partiying is definitely recommended

Yup, gotta agree with the grouping suggestions. If youre still having trouble partied up, try to put together a bigger party. If that isnt helping, you may want to engage them at a distance and let them close with you before instead of leaping into melee yourself, etc.

I think the problem is coming from scaling spawns.

I tend to be doing okay fighting until some higher level charges through and causes two groups of six or so enemies to spawn near to me.

Higher level people shouldn't be running past and spawning things like that without taking care of them... Just sayin'.

            How do I get around?

I find it rather odd that you're dying in the viridale with a level 6 party... that's not a tough area. What types of people have you tried to play with?

                  Generally other fighter-types...

Seems to be getting better, now, though. Picked up a few magic items to make things safer.

As long as you stay out of the adjoining areas like the stonegarb caves you should have very little difficulty in the main forest area, and probably the muckspear village.

The village is still hard, and the main area is tough if I can't control the spawns, still.

But it's the nice kind of tough, now, instead of overwhelmingly so. After all, if I wanted easy I'd have gone CoDzilla.

I had a paladin that got to lvl 12 without dying(except for dm hosted events), with mostly all non magical items. The secret is to boost your ac as high as you can with feats/items/spells, dont take risks(stay back of group and not attack if possible, avoid certain monsters), and be a coward(run if you see your group getting slaughtered, better a few die than to all die and no one come back for them later). Sure you may level more slowly this way. Its definately less frustrating than dying all the time.

Meh, my character is not one for hiding or cowardice, and I'm not one for taking on the weakest, easiest opponent I can get XP from.

Getting used to the dying now. :P

That doesn't really sound like a Paladin, heheh.

But he's right, from a levelling-versus-danger perspective. You'll generally get a lot farther playing it safe.
