*chuckles* I don't mean to be disrespectful but...Originally posted by RynebowBright View PostJuat a friendly poke to say that this seems to be getting in to the realm of flaming so ya may want to cool it some.
Thanks!
...what?
Anyways, Rannarix. What we're having right now is a debate over the repercussions of an arguement. Honestly, if you could set some ground rules: No putting other people down or take low blows at people, then perhaps a thread like that could thrive full of thoughtful and interesting arguements that may effect the player community in a positive manner. A debate or rant is *NOT* an angry thing. It's about bringing two people's or a group of people's ideas and perspectives together in a civil conversation and hopefully learning something you had overlooked by hearing it from another's perspective.

A rant is, by virtue of its denotation, violent in its nature. A forum dedicated to rants would not be in the best interest of promoting community well-being. Debates are another matter altogether, but experience dictates that few internet debates last long before turning into nothing more than a "your opinion sucks and mine is better" spectacle.Keenan - who is she?

"...few internet debates last long before turning into nothing more than a "your opinion sucks and mine is better" spectacle..."
I suppose it depends on the communities you frequent. Debate doesn't have to devolve into flame-war. And besides, admins can lock down anything that gets out of hand.
I don't want a rant forum. If you have an issue that requires a "rant" that includes personal attacks, why not tone it down to something that isn't a rant and doesn't include personal attacks? That's called "maturity".
And if you really must take issue with someone or something, find a more personal medium (not that I support that...).
Debate good. Rant bad.
End of rant.

I also agree with this wholeheartedly. You're right that there is a difference between a rant and a debate but the nature of internet forums that I have seen... a debate/rant/whatever turns ugly more often than not. Too many folks get angry when others disagree with their opinions and posting when angry is never good. (I've seen a spark of it here and there on this forum already.)Originally posted by VanillaRose View PostA rant is, by virtue of its denotation, violent in its nature. What's the point of ranting? If you for some reason feel better for typing an often baseless, personal, painful to read essay on a public forum for other people to read, why not just step away from your computer and yell for a bit? Rants don't solve problems, rants don't create dialogue; they're the equivalent of a textual hissy fit. Most times, the person that rants gets told he's a tool for ranting, and well, that's not helpful, either.
Real issues can be pm'd to a staff member. Personal issues can be pm'd to players. Pointless venting can be...just left off the forums...please?
Creating an entire forum for rants? Seems like a bad idea, providing an avenue for it all, but I suppose we could label it "Day Care."Mirumoto Akagi: What is dance?
Dalon Arogard: It's this. *busts a move*
Llew Hy: A strange compulsion...
Mirumoto Akagi: I suppose you can dance if you like, but you're leaving our friends behind, and they're not dancing.
Dalon Arogard: Then they're no friends of mine.

Given basic rules I've seen rants functioning very well on other servers - even help to point out problems once in awhile.
Rules:
1: No names
2: No personal attacks(keep it somewhat vague)
3: Vent some damn steam!
^ Or similar..
(edit) Oh, and folks who don't want to see rants do not 'sign up' for it. Keeps everyone happy more or less...
