I like this idea, but I don't see the need for a system for it.

If someone wants to steal my character's spellbook, all they'd need to do is ask me OOC, and I'd play along with it IC.

would make it check for the item and quit if does not have it then fire it normal.

Though would be much easier (and less likely to crash the server) if they locks were just increased to a higher dc.

      level 15 charactors
skill 18 add in dex bonus max 20 or 24 with potion (5~6)

      add 20

20+18+5 = 43 so if the dc to a lock is set to say 44 or 50 it should force them to use lock picks.

no scripting much easier to do.
That could work if the locking/unlocking from the UI was activated through SCRIPT commands, but it isn't. Hardcoded, as I said in the initial post
Now, I do suppose we could write our own implementation of every function on every UI, but then you're getting dangerously close to writing your own engine with inefficient code as the scripting access we have is there for moddability, and will rarely if ever run as fast as the hardcoded stuff does. Not even to mention all the compatibility issues that can and will come with it.

Besides that, I'd prefer not to mess with that file.

I don't blame you, I would not want to either.

Folks should rp theft, and I was figuring more the line of being able to set the DC to a look when an area is built or perhaps IG during a dm event.

Not sure about the Dm ability to set the DC to unlock.

Though setting all locks in the module 10 points higher would insure folks have to use picks or have a rogue I think.

I don't think setting DC's was really the point of the post, but rather that it's dubious that a rogue can even manage to pick locks if he doesn't have anything to pick them with. Just like with spellbooks though, it can all be RP'ed out. If someone is searched and locked up somewhere by a DM, all it really takes is to say 'your lockpick set has been taken away and thus you can't break out that way'.

I believe it's possible to set a DC already, although I'm not sure. If it isn't, it's not too hard to add in.

Say a rogue was going to hide some lockpicks somewhere on his/her body to try to keep ahold of them after being locked up. What the heck do you roll for a check on that, or do I even want to know?

Well, that's an easy question to answer actually. You roll what ever the dm tells you to roll. But if I remember correctly it's probaby a Slight of Hand check, at least it would be in 3.5, not sure if that skill in Sundren though.
