  • Appraise tool

I don't know if this is even possible, but if it is, it would be a huge help I think.

Problem: If you want to buy something from another player, you have no idea, and no way to tell what their items are worth, unless you remember what you bought/sold them for previously from an NPC. For example, someone finds some rare gem, lets say a ruby, and they are just going to sell it to an NPC. You want to buy the ruby, but how do you have even a remote idea of what its worth? Sure you could ask them, but they need not tell you the truth. A character with appraise ranks shouldn't have to rely on someone else to tell them what its worth.

So I'd suggest that an appraise tool be made, so that you can use it somehow on items in the barter screen or your own inventory and get a ballpark idea of how much an item is worth. More appraise skill could give a more accurate value. I'd say this should be its "true" value, since merchants pay varying amounts for items and sell them for different amounts as well, but these are all some percent of a "true" value.

Again, no idea if its possible or not, but if it is, it would be nice.

Decent idea, it wouldn't be too difficult to have lets say a magnifying glass and you use it on an item and it will tell you the GP value.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Personally, I think it is not a very good idea and the following is why:

Appraise ranks is far beyond just calculating what an item is worth. It is also the ability to either sell or buy items at a lesser or greater price, depending on which person possesses the higher ability.

In other words, it's the knowledge of "Business" if you want to call it that way.

I'd think that if I wanted to be a merchant and face someone that has experience in the appraisal domain, I would go for a game of dice rolls on appraise.

Explaining what is worth the item is a part, it's mostly roleplay. Though the roll on the ability, to me, would be needed to either get the person you are buying or selling to believe on your "product" or idea.

        It's about convicing.

With the item that is proposed above, one would be able to see what it's worth where? on a general merchant store? it has not much sense to me, with due respect.

An apprase skill means just that. The ability to talk your way to what you seek to sell or buy an item. It's not about much of a lie. It's about being a good vendor and knowing the way to catch the "customer's" attention

I could even speak of other domains where appraisal works, though in this topic I believe what I explained above is sufficient.

Oh we're not going to make it that easy to appraise an item, but you will at least get a ballpark figure of what it's worth.

Ok, all done. Next update it will be in.

            How it works:

If you use your GUI Skills button and choose appraise while targeting an item, it will secretly roll an appraise check (d20 + appraise ranks) against the rarity of that item (rarity dependent on its Value). You will never know if you have passed or failed the roll. If you fail the check you still get an appraised value but it will tell you the cost is actually 50% to 150% of its true value.

Base DC for a appraise check is DC 12.
For every 5000 gp value of the item, this is raised by +1
So a item worth 30,000gp would be DC 18 to appraise correctly.
Being a skill check, 1's and 20's are not auto failure/ auto pass.

That sounds awesome. Looks like those wizards and rogues with extra skill points will have a new toy.
