Nobody has really addressed my main point. Which is: Banning familiars from the trading post is bad for RP, allowing them is good for RP. Anyone have any comments on that?
The rule of common sense applies, bringing in a giant spider or cougar into the trading post will most likely get you bopped on the head with a boot to your arse... that's if you don't even get denied by the guards on the outside watching every single person go in.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
Someone had an issue with me the other day for bringing my Badger into the trading post.
That was probably me. Allow me to explain:
There is supposed to be a sign outside that says they are not allowed in settlements, yet everytime I go to a settlement, there's a bunch of wolves/panthers/other varmints. I think it's annoying as f***.
Same goes with drawn weapons. RP server folks, come on.

In my opinion, familiars can be RPed outside of settlements just fine, so I don't think banning them from settlements is bad for RP at all.

The problem is that there isn't always someone around to enforce this. Pretty much every time I've gone to the firepit, there's a wild animal there or some asshat with a drawn weapon.

Be honest, were does the majority of RP get done on the server? Around the firepit. Banning familiars there bans most RP with them.
With all due respect, I don't think the server will suffer too much with a few less talking pigs. Furthermore, I don't think it really matters where the majority of a server's RP takes place. But if we're going to follow your logic, then consider that it's pretty easy to round up a group at the firepit and then go somewhere else where the familiar can be summoned normally.
The reason the firepit is where most RP takes place, is its where people pass through, it's the high traffic area, if you have to leave it to RP, again, you defeat the purpose. While we are discussing it, what are the downsides of familiars around the firepit? Are there any besides the fact that it annoys you?

Not really. What do you think happens when a group goes on an adventure? They meet somewhere and leave to RP, so I don't follow your logic.

My beef is more with animal companions and drawn weapons as opposed to familiars. But hey, I'll play your game, so here goes:
1. It's against the posted laws. Laws can be broken, sure, but it's pretty disrespectful to the integrity of the setting and server to get away with it because "the guards don't care" (read: a DM isn't around).
2. It's unnecessary. The RP that familiars add is negligible. We've all seen the talking pig/pseudodragon/dildo before, it's old hat.
3. Magical creatures, especially ones who can talk, are going to be viewed with suspicion by commoners. Such certainly wouldn't be very good for business at a trading settlement. Other people trade at Exigo than just PCs, so keep that in mind. This also trumps the whole "they should cater to wizards because they sell scrolls" argument. AGain, see point #1.
4. Clutter. The firepit is usually packed with PCs. Do we really need another bunch of critters there? What about people with slower machines? I'm sure they'll appreciate the extra lag that critters generate.
I agree on the whole having your weapons drawn thing. Keep'em sheathed when you are around other people.
As for Familiars...
For casters, they are an extension of them, and provide possible RP. Aside from actually in a city, they should be allowed. I imagine most people who frequent Exigo and the Crossroad know enough about Rangers or Druids companions, or wizards and sorcerers familiars to not be too worried about them.

First up I'm not fussed with what you find annoying OOC. IC you had a point, you were a monk who is going to obey those kind of things by your nature asn would rightly be annoyed by it. But IC yeah?

Welcome to the world of Chaotic characters! Come on in and enjoy.
You think my Druid cares about a sign saying 'No animals'? Hell no!

This has nothing to do with class/alignment. If I had a chaotic character, that character would probably bring up the same issue, though probably with a different argument.

This has nothing to do with lawful/chaotic. Look at the Zhentarim. Huge criminal organization and guess what alignment they are? Lawful. Perhaps you miss the context of what a lawful character is.
The point isn't what your druid cares about a sign, the point is the guards wouldn't let the varmint into the settlement in the first place, but you've found that since a DM isn't there to enforce it, that it doesn't matter and that your PC can get away with it. I think that's one of the most disrespectful things someone can do on a roleplay server.
Ah well we just gonna have to disagree. Contrary to your assertion I have no intention of flame baiting, and if temperatures are gonna get so raised about such a silly issue then I’ll just stop right there before it gets out of hand.
One thing that does bother me though is when people don their ‘RP Police’ hat and start telling others how to play, got no time for it, anyway sorry going off topic so I’ll leave that there as well.

That is a good point. If you are breaking the law in the trading post, you should keep in mind that you are then breaking a law in front of several armed officials who would all, realistically enforce some kind of punishment. To break the law in front of them and get away with it is an abuse of game mechanics, and the lack of an intuitive AI. If a DM was watching, he or she would likely smack you for doing that by posessing one of the guards, and fining you, removing you, or even imprisoning you if you retaliate or resist.
If you want to break the law IC, look out for the IC preventions, which in this case equate to guards.
Additionally, I'm going to make an animal-hating Paladin who will, in the name of the law, kill everyone's animal companion. Especially bears. Why would you bring a bear into a trading outpost? Come on...

Heh. He just angry that his mount didn't make it into the game?
