  • More Obnoxious Spell Effect Removals?

Hey there, figured I'd put up my suggestion that some more of the sadness-inducing obnoxious effects be cut from the mod. I've limited experience playing through thus far, but specifically playing a divine caster I've noticed that Shield of Faith and Entropic Shield, both level 1 spells, make one look like a disco ball dipped in varnish. Garish and awful. D=

Am a big fan of subdued/invisible spell effects, and the overdone-ness of even these basic low level ones induces tears.

If anyone else has suggestions for others to add onto this list, this'd be the place to do it.

as much of an eyesore some of the spell effects are, if you read the description from it's source it is a swirling mass of energy giving you some concealment from incoming arrow fire etc.

    ...but to stay on topic:
    barkskin
    spiderskin
    stoneskin

this isn't a post to remove the way they look just my opinion that I feel it could be done with alittle visually pleasing.

I personally would like to see most if not all spell buff effects to be gone. Wizards still have to deal with Stoneskin, Ethereal/Ghostly Visage, Spiderskin, Protection from Arrows, Protection from Energy, Shadow Shield, Globes of Invulnerability, and so on, and I know all the other caster classes have lots of bad spell buff effects as well.

Actually...it doesn't say that. It just says 'A magical field appears around you, causing enemies to suffer a 20% chance to miss you with ranged attacks.'

Field can be (and is usually/should be) invisible.

Agreed with Rhifox, when it comes to buff effects, in NWN2 less is more. =X

I agree with this to. I don’t know if it fits in how it should look in the description or not but it’s to flashy for my taste. I have never liked how it felt like you’re a glowing sphere when you are trying to sneak around in some dark dungeon. If it’s possible to remove the effect my vote is for it.

The effects are obnoxious it's true... but one problem with doing away with them is that the little icon thingy that's meant to appear above your head when they expire doesn't do so for quite a few of (wizards) protective spells so buffs might be disappearing without player knowledge. Why they couldn't have a message in the combat window, I'll never understand.

Ahem. If you think the spell effect visuals for the Stoneskin, Barkskin, or Spiderskin spells, along with certain other 'effect' spells, like Ethereal/Ghostly Visage, Shadow Shield, etc., I can only hope that you suffer brain damage. That way, at least the stupidity makes sense.

So people who wear items or use magic effects that grant increase strength should suddenly be rippling with muscles? Just because a spell effect says 'Stoneskin' does not mean that the 'stone' part of the spell is actually visible. It just means your skin is as hard as stone.

Ethereal/Ghostly Visage, yeah, you've got me there. Though I'd prefer maybe a typical 'ghost' visage where you're half transparent and maybe pale skin, not this 'HEY I'M A GHOST, LOOK AT MY WHITE CANVASSED SKIN (different from pale) AND RAINBOW AURA!'. Shadow Shield as well should cloak the user in shadow (like a small Darkness spell around you), not this big ball of black ripples which doesn't cloak the user in shadow at all.

I dunno... I love my magic to be flashy. And it's been said before by DMs that Barkskin for exemple can be part of a disguise and should be RPed as such (give bonus to Bluff or something). Magic is supposed to be spectacular, where psionics are the insidious forces of the mind. And this is a video game, which must support the player visually in order to entertain him.

A line must be drawn between the "invisible air spheres" spell effects and the appearance-altering spells. I think that, yes, a Bull's Strength spell should make the target's muscles grow larger, just as Enlarge makes bigger. To cite old FR Books, namely Pool of Radiance (again!), a noob wizardess said she'd like to be stronger while unpacking her horse while wearing a Ring of Three Wishes, and to her horror saw her body grow into a bodybuilder's permanently. She found herself ugly as sin, but in truth her defining traits and proportions did not change. That's just my contribution, for the sake of discussion.

No DnD game to date that I know of has ever implemented psionics, so that's out of the picture.

If I recall correctly, you could use psionics in Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (an underrated, though buggy, game from the early 90s).

This thread is turning Emo fast. The skin spells will remain, the shields and bubbles and such will be toned down as I remember to do it. Which I likely won't remember.

That was a very cool game... but the bugs killed me! There were some that made the game unfinishable, and you had to go waaayyyy back...

But yeah, spell effects . The bubbly ones are the most ugly and irritating I suppose (the fact that the protection from evil effect is gone is something at least... that was loud!)
