  • When DMs aren't around ...

I wanted to get this idea out before I go away. It's simply an idea for discussion and to get it on record.

What sparked the idea is the result of the latest poll indicating that the most popular thing people would like to see in the future is "Quests, more things to do when DMs aren't around!"

The idea is to have a way for DMs to run "events" without their actual presence. It would be a substitute for a regular event and make event participation easier for those who play at times when DMs are rarely on-line.

How I envisioned things is that the event would be set up in a character request, by PMs or otherwise. In fact, PMs would probably be the primary means of communication between the player (assume plural too from now on) and the DM.

The DM would leave an identifier object somewhere that the player could pick up. The player then goes off on a "quest" to move the story along. Progress would be made with triggers which only fire for the player with the identifier. The triggers would have an expiry if that's possible. Results are scripted for each trigger. The player then reports back to the DM. Repeat the process as often as the "event" requires. Eventually, of course, the player and a DM would have to meet in-game for XP and/or other rewards.

The whole thing should be at least theoretically possible.

This is a very quick summary of the idea and much would need to be fleshed out.
    Cheers,
    Dave

As great as that sounds, would it not be easier and more fun having a GM that's stationed in another timezone (The european timezone comes to my mind for some reason)

It would indeed. The whole idea is not intended to replace DMs, but to enable DMs to work with players who play at different times than the DM does, and to fill gaps in DM availability.

But yeah, I like it. Maybe it could be incorporated into the factions? Players in other timezones than the canadians could litterally find a 'to-do' list in faction HQ's.

Brainstorming on that point: It would be cool if other players could leave assignments for other players in faction HQ too. I've seen interactive notice boards on other servers, I dunno if they're a bitch to script. And we have the forum of course. I just like to bring more things into the game itself!

I'm really a eurozone player, if you go by times, even though I live in Canada.

Bonus points for referring to it as the Canadian timezone.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

If people have a timezone with no DM, you might consider putting in applications. We want more DMs we just don't have people stepping forward and some of our DMs have writer's block XD

The only tools I use when attempting to DM is my dual-wielding brace of rod of wonders. I'm not sure those skills are wanted
