    *controversial unstafflike position*

People are always free to submit applications (via character requests) or make bio's for respective classes/races.

It's worth noting that there's a >98% chance it being refused or ignored. Doesn't mean you can't try though.

The only problem I really have with the RPotM deal is that it rewards good guys far more than team evil. Which I suppose is fair as team evil has the super OP that is the vampire. But most locked races tend to be evil aligned. So you have people who show their qualities as playing a super hero and then they go ahead and try to play a villain. Doesn't always fly well, imo. Take the list rogue posted, one evil doer amongst them all? And how long has it been since a evil character has won before Kirk? Mathell, maybe? Logan the Foul? I don't know, I'm not looking at the list of winners but its been awhile. Wouldn't mind seeing people start voting for their favorite foes instead of their favorite grind and tea party friends. Not to nay say those who won as the names up there are all of people I know to be solid role players. So the system does work.

After the game, the king and the pawn go into the same box.

To follow some of the thinking laid out by the Arishok in Dragon Age 2: You have the freedom to choose be refused.

You can apply, but I'm being generous with a 98%+ refusal chance, it's closer to 100%. Your application may not be replied to, or you may be told to win RPoTM or you may just get a flat 'No'. But you can apply.

If you can face the almost certain refusal, then go for it - If your idea is so inspired, unique and utterly brilliant that the DM team feel that it deserves implementing, then you might get a yes.

          Edit:
I feel I should point out that the staff line is that all these things are RPoTM winner only. This is not going to change and is a very, very dead horse to be flogging.

But, what kind of life would it be without a sliver of hope, eh?

Priya, Ursus, Xaayne, Kyle, Lilene = Neutral (presently or at the time; one is now evil).

Quite a few evil/nefarious runners-up in the past, and Kaizen won, who was evil as shit. Lot of "good guy" winners in the past, though. It also doesn't help that much of "team evil" has been made up of staff members.

              I love you too, Root.
              Ouch! Put away those claws.
              raging topic that is off-topic.
              *facepalm*

Point being that the characters winning RPoTM do so because they've a lot invested in the winning char. Backstory built up, involvement in plots, et cetera. (Popularity contest or not, those things are contributions to popularity)

Any new character started in the midst of that character's roll is going to be a part-time thing, and hence not have the same qualities that likely earned RPoTM in the first place.

Unless for instance you perma'd your RPoTM char, then set out the tables and think out a solid backing for the wierd race char, and then build them up just as the previous one, the new character is always going to seem somewhat half-hearted.

Free to take it as an insult if you wish. As a comedian once said, be offended. Nothing happens, especially not leprosy!

Though deny me if you will, that a lot of the new, odd-race characters rolled up by RPoTM'ers always have the feeling of an aside to the main character, something to play in the off-time, etc. Their hearts are not in it, instead being in their main, RPoTM characters, the ones with backstory, changed personlities, reputations, a character they clearly enjoy based on the dedication, and so on. The new ones seem to generally be gimmicks, novel ideas, but never with the depth of the originals.

There, sugar-coated my point for easier digestion.
Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:
"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! You are made of meat and I am very hungry!"

I think that sums it all up nicely.

Right, I don't think there's really much more to add that hasn't been brought up already.

RPoTM is needed to acquire one of the locked races or classes - Winning this and providing the staff with a good back story will probably get you the class/race you are after.

The system may or may not change at some far distant point in the future, but for now it is a very dead horse subject. Flog it at your peril.

As a personal note, I see no reason that you cannot, should you so desire, write a bio and/or application and post it. However, when doing so you must accept that it WILL be refused, ignored, or told that it's viable once you've won RPoTM. If nothing else you'll enjoy writing it, and I'll enjoy reading it.

Hope is a fine thing to have, ask all those people who play the lottery every week.
