Becoming Epic...ain't that Lonely at the top?
There always a price tag to that no?
You end up being Like those old fisherman,
always full of tales but hardly nobody ever believe you
because they think its been exaggerated or your crazy to them.
So tales of epic become like statues that are left behind in time till nobody truly knows the story and so its just falls as legend or a spookie story around a campfire.
as far as role player of the month if i ever caught it i wouldn't know what to do with it .

now enough with the Yoda speech lets be someone else and pray for therapy shall we?
There is another realm, a space, a wordless mixture of melancholy and exstacy... a taste in the mind. not success or failure; but tales of strengh, glimpses of beauty, moments of depth between beings reveal our lives

I think I saw the horse twitch, so I'm going to throw out a new idea:

Why not just add a small, new system that also opens up the potential to put in applications (or even other, similar RPoTM benefits as you see fit)? Something that is not based on time logged in per week, nor based on who you're lucky enough to meet and interact with. Luck and time should not be the metrics by which a person is judged.

I propose a forum writing competition, recurring. Use the character stories that we can work on outside of the game as a new metric for something players can do to get themselves recognized. Let the playerbase openly vote on favorite entries.

It didn't twitch. Probably beetles or something.

The system you propose would still require the DMs to go through and review writing contest applications, so no real difference to the application system we used to have, and removed.

People are free to place RPoTM votes based on forum input - it's not just who you meet in game.

Rare is good I think. If we grant more access to more players, then all manner of gensai and aasimar and what have you, will be traipsing about. There was an influx of tiefling a few months back. Two showed up on server near the same time. It was less than a week before they were common place and accepted at the firepit. No one even batted an eye anymore. It was sad.

I would hate for that to happen more. Can't say I have ever been a huge fan of RPOTM but if DMs are asked to make the call, people's feelings get hurt. It happens, trust me. "You play favorites!" "You never even read my proposals" "You picked Player-X!? WTF?"

          I don't want that.

If you are really burning to play a restricted, start posting some story on forums *little note attached* "character concept pending RPoTM"

          Two birds one stone:
1)Satisfy your need to get this character lore out.
2)Might inspire folks to consider you for RPoTM.

Actually a really good idea. Then maybe we can get some good characters put through rather than someone winning the contest and just suddenly throwing out a demon to look cool.

Perhaps another way to do this is to modify the existing "add to faction reputation" mechanism to accommodate rewarding RP.

If Character A has a particularly rewarding role play session with Character B, they could elect to add to that person’s “RP Score.” Give each character a finite number of the RP points they can spend each month so as to reduce “tribalism.”

If possible, each character’s RP Score could be viewed via the statistics function in the forum. At the end of each month the person with the highest RP score wins.

                Still based on popularity.

Point made. This is not the perfect solution; however, if the "add faction reputation" mechanism were used then both characters would have to be present in game, in the same area, at the same time.

This would absolutely prevent a flood of RPotM voting via the forum based on slick advertising or “tribal” voting.

I'll probably do this, thanks. I think everyone has explained their positions as much as possible in this thread, so for my part it's just time to let this one go. I appreciate so many of the staff coming out to debate this with openly and explain their position(s), even if it's not the answers I was hoping for!

Here's a thought.... perhaps this "popularity" you speak of is partially based on RP merit?
Annaleen Wiltenholm-There's always something to smile about.
Chani Kalera- Intimidation is the new diplomacy. *looms*
Eleanor "Bloody Elle" Lark - Why is the rum always gone?
Yolanda Brown - If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. But unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is going to suck.
                        Astrid Hammerhand - Och!

If you look at many of the the past RPotM winners, you'll find that they're not (or at least weren't at the time) so extensively networked.

Kyle (campaigned for, but this dude deserved it)

Amilynn and I were the only two that were really part of a large group of players.

Of these players, two (2) made ECL PC's (a third was just created the other day, and it doesn't have any sort of exceptional/bizarre look).

Then maybe we can get some good characters put through rather than someone winning the contest and just suddenly throwing out a demon to look cool.
                          In closing, umad?

This wasn't supposed to be about pointing fingers, guys. The complaint was about not playing as often, and getting to interact with less people overall as a consequence (which does affect "popularity contests" pretty directly). It's a system complaint, not a playerbase complaint.

If you have issues against specific players or groups of players, don't bring that bad mojo into this thread!

When I first started up on here I thought the restrictiveness was a BS but as I played longer I actually found that I like the rarity...

As for Root's raging topic that is off topic...the playerbase on this server responds more negatively to Half-Orcs and Orcs than to people with horns and a tail

And no it doesnt help that there have been no BLATANTLY evil horned and tailed chars or warlocks for that matter

As for RPotM as a whole..

                                Lilene
                                Emiliana
                                Kirk
                                Xaayne

interacted often and very well with a large portion of the playerbase also most of them wrote stuff in the RP forum

Kyle I think won because the campaigning remided people he existed which made them recall how awesome that char is portrayed

A popularity contest? yes, but anyone that has RP'd with these chars would say they deserved to win

Short Version: I'm fine with RPotM staying how it is but I think people should be able to submit applications and stuff for the restricted things a la RDD and whatnot

Those restrictions are the only thing keeping us from turning into BG TSCC and I'd hate to see that
