  • In the name of <insert random name>...!

I know there has been discussion about similar things like this, but hardly anyone ever states it ICly if they don't want their deity known. I can see how this suggestion is going to be taken by some as NOOOOoo! But I'm going to make it anyway.

When clerics (and FS's?) cast a spell in the name of their deity, perhaps they should be forced to say something like "With Ilmater's Blessing" or "In Banes name I declare my Faith!" (Bless and Word of Faith for example).

Partly I suggest this for certain spells because the way I see it you aren't going to say "Generic Blessings from a Miscellaneous god!" when you really mean it, you're going to invoke something with a bit more power so that someone says... "Ah, someone wants something... a bit of blessing, sure, here, have a toenail shaving!"

Now, I'm not saying that it HAS to be the actual name of the god, for some of these spells, even, say "In the Tyrant's Name, I bless thee." might be enough. Some people do this either with their deities name, or with what they control "In the name of the Eternal Fire, I condemn thee!"

It could be scripted into certain spells, and it would make people a bit more wary of who is blessing them, and certain clerics a bit less fast and loose about who they're blessing.

Cleric of Bane as 20 ogres are charging - "In Banes name I bless thee!"
Paladin of Torm - "Tha... say what???"
Bree - Bookkeeper and diplomat of Exigo.

Becky Dragonhin - Sword of the Loyal Fury, Knight of the Triad... the only Good hin in Sundren???

    Sounds like a great idea!

Although, I think just "In the name of <Deity name>!" would be fine. If the Devs have to make a custom name like "The Dark One" or something for each deity, that seems like a lot of unnecessary work.

The trouble with scripting in something like that is that it's a total catchall - There are plenty of dieties and clerics who're very good at infiltrating and staying hidden, even in plain sight.

Scripts that give away class and god (Entry to the Mossdale fort, I'm looking at you - Like hell would most people happily announce "I'm a rogue of Cyric" or "I'm a Ranger of Shar") are to be pointed at and mocked.

That said, I agree with the sentiment - a bit more 'In X's name' a bit less *Spams buff chain of high-power spells with no-rp at all*

More RP and though - Less unbendable scripting.

Personally i love the idea... Whenever I use spells that I think relate to Garagos's destructive nature or anything that may invoke fear in an enemy, such as rage or even blade barrier, I try to get Cruven to say something along the lines of "For the Reaver!" or anything like that. But usually i cast them in the middle of a battle so dont really have the time to type something like that out...
        My to-be toon:
        Shafiq Al-Mawt: Zakharan myrkulite.

        My tomb of old toons:
Cruven Schlachten - Blood Reaver of Garagos, Blackwood Company Elite, Hellstrom Head of Security
Marcus Waynard- Horned Harbinger, fear his best bud Frank!... and Jim, Bob, Sue, and Jane...
Davlamin Frostfoot - Frosty Snowflake, the Frozen Fist of Auril, sworn enemy of the Second Wind fire pit.

I was thinking of just specific spells, like Bless, Prayer, Word of Faith, things that inherently make sense (at least to me) to invoke a name or Title.

I still think that even in those cases, many of the gods would agree with the human not making their name known. After all, it's pretty tough to infiltrate another clergy if you're constantly telling them you're praying to someone else.

all powerfull cleric spells should involve something in there gods name, but haveing the time to shout out "in the name of Gummy god of bears i call death on you" as 4 goblins jump you is just not goign to happen.

that said you have plenty of time to spout out a nice long speach when buffing your party for 15 mind before hand or if your asked to rais the dead something fitting should be said in Lliiras name (even if you dont follow Lliira you should thank her for it as the rules said this, page 17458....the part i just added...mind the ink its still wet) and for any that cant come up with a fitting name to hide who they follow from others just put 12 points in INT and hope to hell no one in your party learned the same languge you pray in.

You think people should RP their casting from time to time? I take offence to that sir, much as I do to your avatar's moustache! Pistols at dawn?

If you are playing a toon that casts divine spells it should be obvious to most you faith. I understand the whole stealth cleric infiltrating their enemy’s… wait, no I don’t. Well if the god you follow is one of stealth, trickery, … perhaps. True not all cleric go around spouting there god’s name then again if they do not who will and their god will lose power to the lack of followers.

Ash is a cleric and sometimes mention it in greetings. If you spent any time with Yod you know who he follows. If you do your gods bidding then most should be able to figure it out…

Hey what about using some of those skills… “Knowledge: Religion”, if you roll X then the player needs to tell you. I mean if I have 20-30 points in Knowledge: Religion then I would know right!

I think mechanics do not need to be put in place if divine toons play their roll right.

                  Nez
Elandra: A former Red Blade, now roams the wilderness with the Lone wolf as her guide
Alexandra: Ever faithful (just shy of a Zealot)
Yodglum: May Kossuth's flame light your way and burn those in it!
Ash: Dusty old miner of still looking for the "mother load" on Exigo's stag

Shaving kittens: not an official sport, but fun just the same

Make the roll automatic, if it succeeds info is revealed to the roller. Do the same for vampires, werecreatures, and any weird stuff the player character may be.

"If people dont rp something the way I think they should, then force them to with scripting"

Can't say I'm a fan of the idea.

Skills are there for a reason, it's perfectly reasonable to roll Knowledge to gather information about relevant topics. At least in everyday vanilla D&D. And it gives an automated use of skills that one may never use otherwise. Automation is the word, mate.

                          "isten check"

                          You hear banes name mentioned.

Simple as this, i think making someone envoke the name takes alot of the rp out of it.
