  • Recent Battles and Reports

Rumors circulate that the recent fighting on the front lines has reached a peak, and that the tide of the war is slowly turning back to the Legion's favor. A resounding victory at the Sharahan Hills helped boost morale, but the most recent battle at the Viridale has raised the people's hopes from their former despair.

The Bloodmaim were successfully held off at the Viridale border by a rag-tag group of Legionnaires and adventurers. Reports say that there was some powerful magic used during the battle that prevented troops from teleporting in or having any healing magic cast, but the cause was found and destroyed by a splinter group of the Fourth Legion.

The group who remained at the border held off wave after wave of Bloodmaim troops (who were using the nearby river to transport) through the ingenious use of landmines and barricades. Just when all seemed lost, the splinter group of the Fourth Legion enabled teleportation, allowing the Fifth Legion to send in reinforcements to route the Bloodmaim threat.

But the real news, or so say some, is the Veritas force that joined the Legion in its defense of the line. Despite their differences, they fought together in a combined stand against the orcish army. After the battle, it is said that there was little obvious difference between the Legion and the Veritas warriors in the way they leaned upon one another to seek healing, and that their leaders traded a handshake of friendship and trust.

    -------

News from the capital has been less optimistic. The Arbiter's are dead set against any alliance with the Veritas forces who have sought control over the government for so long.

Steward Iago Cassio, spokesperson for the Arbiters on this matter, has reportedly said this:

"Despite their intentions, there is no feasible way for Sundren to ever accept the Veritas Rebellion as a legitimate ally in this fight against the Bloodmaim. The Legion is as powerful as ever, and cannot benefit from the alliance as much as the rebels can."

"We cannot recognize the alliance at this time."

    -------

Other news from the Imperatu's campsite on the forefront of the lines is decidedly different. Imperatu Verinus himself spoke to messengers at the time of the Veritas offer of alliance. He had this to say, supposedly:

"The Legion is a powerful force, but we are facing the likes of which we haven't seen since the First Bloodmaim War. We have trimmed the fat from our soldiers, and to this day there is not a single Legionnaire who is not an experienced veteran.

Our soldiers have known the loss of real war, and they know the value of an ally against an inhuman monster such as the Bloodmaim. I, for one, will not only accept the Veritas into our ranks but welcome them. This is no longer a war of politics, a war for who can sit in Sundren City's seat of power, but a war for survival. This is a war for our friends and families, for our very existence as humans, elves, dwarves, and any other goodly race."

"For the sake of our very lives, and for Sundren, I will recognize this alliance."

    -------

There has been no word on the apparent disagreement between the general of the Legion and the ruling council, but few doubt that it will stay as such for long.

A hooded figure stops long enough to take in the conversations on the street, before smiling and moving on. Despite no one speaking of the others that helped, he seems content.

The young Ilmatari priestess and medic continues to talk to the all that will listen, especially the families of the Legion and Veritas. "It is your sons, daughters and husbands that are sent off to the war. There is a chance to end this war once and for all. Support the things that your family fights for now; you, your friends, your family, your former enemies. All ruled by those in high towers far away from the real fight. The general is right, the time to join together in this fight is now."

A lone swordsman spread his own stories on what happened on that fateful night.

Sundren's darkest hour, it's defenders helplessly outnumbered. The infinite hordes of the Bloodmaim Orcs closing in on the dwindling numbers of Sundren's would-be protectors. The incompetent leaders failing to come up with a plan, the soldiers losing their wills to fight. But when it all seemed like hope was lost, a glimmer of light came from the North. Some say the South, some say the East, the West, some even say the storyteller forgot which direction he came from. But nay! He came from all directions! This glimmer of light was none other than the legendary sword saint Kyle Rendell. Having driven off the Bloodmaim armies once in Aquor, he came out of retirement to once again save Sundren from total annihilation. The swordsman gave a brilliant speech to boost the morale of the men, though inspiring, it was not needed at all. The soldiers of Viridale knew the battle was won as soon as they knew it was the sword saint Kyle Rendell who was there in person. He quickly assumed command of the men and brought order to the disorganized mess that the group was in, and lead them to a final charge against the orcish hordes bringing them complete and total victory. In the end the soldiers rejoiced, and chants could be heard all through out the vast forests. Rendell, Rendell, Rendell.
"Thanks is best given in the form of gold." -Kyle Rendell

Centurio Emiliana Blackwell, the leader of the splinter group that ultimately re-enabled the magicks that had been barred upon the battlefield, has opted to remain neutral when asked her opinion regarding the schism between the Arbiters and the leader of the Legion. However, it is by no means a secret that the Iron Fist distrusts and dislikes the Veritas rebels, who were determined to be responsible for the deaths of many Legionnaires when the city barracks was bombed so long ago.

Regarding Kyle Rendell and his boasting, Centurio Blackwell offers a (mostly) diplomatic response. "The Legion is appreciative that Guild Elite Rendell decided to lend his sword to the cause despite his arrival coming near the very end of the battle when the majority of the Bloodmaim had already been destroyed. In the whirlwind of conflict and beneath a thick metal helmet, I am certain it was easy for the Blackwood Company mercenary to misconstrue chants of 'Sundren! Sundren!' as something else. It was by the efforts of all involved that victory was achieved, and our momentum against the orc threat is gaining with every success."

A lone figure stepped softly along the upturned and broken earth at the edge of the Viridale. She was a sliver of white against the black-blue night, her long tail trailing behind her as she stepped over broken battlements and shattered weapons. The Legion had long since cleaned away all the corpses, burning those of the Bloodmaim and performing proper rites on their own dead, but to a Spiritspeaker such as herself this lonely field was as crowded as it had been not ten days prior.

She could see them, at the corners of her vision. Hear them, at the edge of her thoughts. The lingering dead of battle, clinging on to a life they had already lost. Their words echoed through her mind.

                "I can't feel...I can't feel. I can't feel anything..."

"Goblins from the east... Never saw them coming...he died in my arms..."

                "Oh Gods, why? Why!?"

Nadya shut her eyes against the wailing dead, and tried to squeeze them out of her mind. They gnashed and cried out all around her, as loudly as if the battle still waged. Too many! she screamed to herself. Her hands clamped down on either side of her head, covering her flattened ears in vain as the recently-dead pounded inside her skull, desperate to be heard. Desperate to find some peace among all this horror.

::You must offer it to them, Follows-The-Snow::

A new, familiar voice broke through the ranks of ghostly chatter. Nadya opened her eyes to regard the white wolf that manifested before her, unafraid and unmoving.

::These spirits that remain cling desperately to the physical realm.:: the great wolf continued, ::They do not belong here, Follows-the-Snow. Not anymore. Left unchecked, some may become wraiths, poltergeists, the vengeful dead. But you, Spiritspeaker, you can help them in their journey.::

Nadya's breath caught in her throat, and she forced herself to swallow. "What am I supposed to do?"

::Guide them. They will know what to do from there. Light the way so that they may find their path.::

Shakily, Nadya pushed herself to her feet. The warriors and defenders of the realm had done their part to protect the people of Sundren from the Bloodmaim assault, and many had paid with their lives. The deserved to find peace, not torment, in their death. There was much work to be done.

It's going to be a long night, Nadya thought.

Not far from the feline spiritspeaker, neither through time nor space, another shepherd worked his own business on the same flock. Much as the spectral sword-bearer who accompanied his passage, he moved between the deep shadows of the ethereal Viridale with a confident ease. Where the Shroud was fully and physically breached, the area was illuminated with a dark anti-light, only the occasional glimpse of black or purple visible to any foolish enough to observe the unhallowed rituals conducted within.

For many of those who had fallen had left something behind. All they needed do was become accepting the loss, totally and utterly, and that all that remained Beyond was the Void. A simple ultimatum bent the weaker souls, and most of the stronger were too set with their deaths to be shifted, but occasionally, very rarely, one found those perfect to serve the Mistress for eternity.

These warriors and rebels, berserkers and soldiers had devoted their entire lived to one duty or another. It would be only natural to move onto another Duty in death. After each conversion, however minor, could be heard a faint hoarse murmur of supplication to the Dark Goddess, before the Nightfather and his entourage returned to their ethereal prowl, leaving naught but a feeling of unease.

Rumors circulate that the Bloodmaim horde has been not defeated, but splintered by the successive victories of the Legion armies and their allies. The war bands roam the valley, but without the organized leadership it once had, there are not as much of a threat.

Legionnaires are reportedly not relaxing, however, because there has been massive movement and bizarre magics coming from deep within the Mossdale. Scouts have reported that they have seen undead rising, and dark figures arming themselves for war.

General Verinus and the Veritas leadership have put out a call for all Legions to gather north of Sundren city, excepting for the barest few to ward off Bloodmaim bands. The massive movement of Legion forces is a sight to behold, thousands of hardened warriors gathering at the call of their leaders.

The sky has show signs of darkening in the middle of the day, and it looks to be an early nightfall for all of Sundren.
