Rumors circulate that the recent fighting on the front lines has reached a peak, and that the tide of the war is slowly turning back to the Legion's favor. A resounding victory at the Sharahan Hills helped boost morale, but the most recent battle at the Viridale has raised the people's hopes from their former despair.
The Bloodmaim were successfully held off at the Viridale border by a rag-tag group of Legionnaires and adventurers. Reports say that there was some powerful magic used during the battle that prevented troops from teleporting in or having any healing magic cast, but the cause was found and destroyed by a splinter group of the Fourth Legion.
The group who remained at the border held off wave after wave of Bloodmaim troops (who were using the nearby river to transport) through the ingenious use of landmines and barricades. Just when all seemed lost, the splinter group of the Fourth Legion enabled teleportation, allowing the Fifth Legion to send in reinforcements to route the Bloodmaim threat.
But the real news, or so say some, is the Veritas force that joined the Legion in its defense of the line. Despite their differences, they fought together in a combined stand against the orcish army. After the battle, it is said that there was little obvious difference between the Legion and the Veritas warriors in the way they leaned upon one another to seek healing, and that their leaders traded a handshake of friendship and trust.
-------
News from the capital has been less optimistic. The Arbiter's are dead set against any alliance with the Veritas forces who have sought control over the government for so long.
Steward Iago Cassio, spokesperson for the Arbiters on this matter, has reportedly said this:
"Despite their intentions, there is no feasible way for Sundren to ever accept the Veritas Rebellion as a legitimate ally in this fight against the Bloodmaim. The Legion is as powerful as ever, and cannot benefit from the alliance as much as the rebels can."
"We cannot recognize the alliance at this time."
-------
Other news from the Imperatu's campsite on the forefront of the lines is decidedly different. Imperatu Verinus himself spoke to messengers at the time of the Veritas offer of alliance. He had this to say, supposedly:
"The Legion is a powerful force, but we are facing the likes of which we haven't seen since the First Bloodmaim War. We have trimmed the fat from our soldiers, and to this day there is not a single Legionnaire who is not an experienced veteran.
Our soldiers have known the loss of real war, and they know the value of an ally against an inhuman monster such as the Bloodmaim. I, for one, will not only accept the Veritas into our ranks but welcome them. This is no longer a war of politics, a war for who can sit in Sundren City's seat of power, but a war for survival. This is a war for our friends and families, for our very existence as humans, elves, dwarves, and any other goodly race."
"For the sake of our very lives, and for Sundren, I will recognize this alliance."
-------
There has been no word on the apparent disagreement between the general of the Legion and the ruling council, but few doubt that it will stay as such for long.
