          I can promise you this: if something does go wrong, we'll never know about it. We'll go quietly into that good night, with no idea who lead us there.

          Ok, all fatalism aside, something bad could conceivably happen. But then again, you could be crushed by falling debries from an exploding jet sitting in your bedroom while reading this message.

            Fermi was worried that detonating a fission device would set the atmosphere on fire... but we're still here (and that was a more reasonable concern than those around the LHC). There's just not enough energy/mass involved to do anything disastrous.
