A smaller one of these has already been in operation for a few years now. Most of the people fretting about creating a black hole that will devour the Earth are people who don't know a thing about science and are making wild paranoid guesses as to what will happen. I'm sure that with the amount of brain-heads involved with the project, they're more than assured that such a thing isn't possible.

Don't underestimate man's fallibility and arrogance. It's a common human flaw to believe you've considered all the alternatives when in fact there's no way that *all* the alternatives might have even occurred to you.

Fermi was worried that detonating a fission device would set the atmosphere on fire... but we're still here (and that was a more reasonable concern than those around the LHC). There's just not enough energy/mass involved to do anything disastrous.
