  • Memorable servers you've played on before

Both NWN1 and NWN2, I'm curious as to what people's (the ones that check the forums at least) backgrounds are.

Almost as soon as NWN1 came out I found a project called NWNOnline. It was a RP/story PW set in Cormyr right after the events of the death of King Azoun and the Death of the Dragon. It was based on Hardcore Rules scripts and very very tough combat wise; CR1 orcs there would powerattack you with 18 or 20 STR and greataxes... I got hit a couple times for around 60 or 70 dmg on a crit... by a CR 1 orc. All the monsters were leftovers from the Dragon's army and very well trained and armed; they used the half orc models rather than standard orcs which made them look that much more intimidating. No one made it to lvl 2 if they soloed.

The project never made it out of beta unfortunately for a number of different reasons, although in the beginning they had a really top notch team and a large playerbase.

Eventually I found ALFA; it too had a custom hardcore ruleset very close to PnP rules and was the most intense RP/story/plot driven community I found anywhere. I had some incredible highs and lows with ALFA's characters and storylines with top notch RPers who opened my eyes to what you could do with the NWN game engine and the DMs were top notch. They had strict standards for RP which were consistently reinforced and added to the focus on RP and DM driven plots; virtually no one farmed on ALFA with any kind of regularity. As well, the playerbase was very good about policing themselves. Leveling was slow, also lending to a PnP like feel.

Eventually I took a break after my most successful PC died at lvl 6 or 7 (no such thing as respawns, and as the death occurred in a cave unknown to others, no rez); when I came back the playerbase had gone largely stagnant and some rules were being put in place that were a bit too over the top like weighted arrows, so I didn't really play regularly for long.

Now you know why I think things like death are creampuff on most NWN2 servers.

NWN2: I tried a couple of servers and was dismayed at the overall lack of RPing, until I found The Frontier and found quality RPers; everyone had to fill out bios to get accepted and PCs approved which I think weeds out a lot of people. The content was very good compared to the other servers I'd seen as well; I played there religiously for a while. Eventually I starting seeing some issues with staff and some DMs that I won't go into, along with way too many high levels running around eventually as xp, gold, and gear got more and more inflated. I also started a PC elven faction that after finally getting approved, got zero support/interaction from staff, adding to my disappointment. I still am around occasionally there but decided to take a bit of a break, especially after finding a link to Sundren from the Thieves' Guild website, and was very impressed by the background/history, the website, staff, and last but not least the content of the mod still in beta stage.

I by no means consider myself a great RPer, but I do look for an environment that has consistent RP even if it's not epic level; that's why I love DM events that are story driven, not because of rewards necessarily but because there's a focused plot/storyline that you can jump onto and interact with dynamicly. Having said that I won't turn down a mithral twilight chain shirt anytime soon if one is found. :P

DragonCoast: IB ( EM was crap- opinion )

Excellent setting, a good ( albeit inconsistent ) DM Base.

    StormNexus

Just a fun place to hang around overall, mainly because most people there just sucked at building characters, and since the nature of the server lent towards powerbuilding, it was enjoyable wiping the floor with most people.

    Siflige

Roleplay server, and despite most negative comments about it, a lot of my roleplay improved from being there.
"Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin -- more even than death.... Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man."

I began on NWNO as well as Ithildur after finishing of the OC of nwn1. Got recruited there as a DM, and had the blastest of experiences, for the first time having a really good roleplaying time in a game. Talk about memory...it's been like 4 years, and after the moment I logged in on sundren, I got a tell from Ithildur asking if I was on NWNO

After the project died, due to it simply falling apart if I remember correctly, I tried different servers.

Played on one named Dasaria for a while, it was fun, but not the best roleplaying as I remember it.

I then went on to another hardcore server, CoA, which still exists I believe, and played there for some years, on and off. I got into the army at this time so my playtimes were rather limited in that period.

Lastly, I began on Cormyr and the Dalelands, which stands as the most exemplary experience I have ever had in a PW. Topnotch players, topnotch team, topnotch custom content...everything I had ever dreamed of. I got completely sucked in, and played there almost 24/7 for a year. Due to problems with problem players, the server went passworded and had some downtime. I used that period to cool off playing online, and try something else for a while. When it came back up...there drive wasn't there to go on anymore, unfortunately.

Then nwn2 came. I started with a national language server, thinking that NOW I could get into those DM events without staying up all night, but however, it turned out that I was more into roleplaying in english than my native language.

So...blank for a while, until I decide searching for a good quality nwn2 PW, found Sundren on the official boards.

Been here ever since! (And having a blast, if I might add)

You remember those NWNO orc crits, Karris? They could lop off the heads of lvl 4 PCs with lucky enough hits, cutting lower lvls in two at the middle... I miss the NWN1 'exploding deaths' from massive damage. That's where I learned to respect high str melee monsters with axes...

We'd have to drag the corpse a long ways to an NPC cleric or find a high lvl PC to try and rez them, which would turn into a whole quest in itself with some fun RPing...

Looking at the thread about RPing fear appropriately, hells, we didn't need to RP fear, we were terrified!! Add to that heavy penalty (lvl loss iirc) for respawning which was what, available only for the first 4 levels, and only real heroes ventured out to fight monsters, in groups. Not these pansies that get chased by goblins, die, respawn and do it all over again.

        and we liked it.

          Too long, but...

Nightmist, Grims Tavern, and a few others are where I mostly was before here. Not known there, mostly just enjoyed my little characters and such. Sundren is the first RP PW where one of my characters feels in general important to the way things go/are or will unfold.

I used to play on Autumnleaf... Had some great roleplay on that server. Got into some great storylines...

            Maleficus "Ravenor" Carnificis
"Dreams... such fertile ground for the seeds of torment. I can sense your ripeness and, oddly enough, it is time for the harvest. Please, save your tears... I intend to reap your sorrow slowly and have ages to discover the things that make you suffer... I am eager to revel in the sweet melody of your screams and the melancholy of your despair..."
            Eldraxus Tzyvioq
Mystic Theurge (and Harper) of Deneir wandering the Sundered Valley in search of (and with the intention of mapping out) places of power, ley-line intersections, and other locations where the divine and arcane intersect...

              I played alot actually, hmmm....

Dragoncoast EM - Very frustrating staff that didn't allow anyone to do anything, but was full of good players.

Aerilith - Played a Drow Cleric, very fun, but people grind too much there

Blackstone Keep - Awesome server for just levelling and playing. Wouldn't work in NWN2 though, since getting to level 20 was a couple days of work Epic was the fun.

Storm Nexus or something - Everyone was a Demon, that got old quick

A wheel of time server I can't remember the name - Played a guard, whoopie

              Edit 4/10/2007:

Seems a few people mistook my thoughts to mean these servers are bad to play on. This was not the intent of this post. Yes, I had frustrations, but the good times outweighed the bad if I played for extended periods of time obviously Experiences with servers obviously vary person to person and no server is 100% perfect, not even Sundren. We try to do better, just as other servers work on problems. Also, some may enjoy everyone being demons on server, or levelling extremely quick, or everyone grinding. I'd also like to note that as I said in other threads, Sundren's policy remains that we do not allow server bashing on the forums. This is not constructive to the multiplayer community at all.

I will leave my original message as reference.

There was only one RP server I played on in NWN1: Empires of Eternity. Decent staff, decent players, decent level design... It was alright.

                  NWN2

                  -Sundren.

                  NWN1

                  -Wahtod
Played and DMed there for over a year until it finally died. All the drama aside, this was the best NWN1 endeavour I had ever involved myself in.

-Tales of the Silver Marches ("TSM")
In its heyday, TSM was a cool server with an active player base. Unfortunately, it suffered from tons of internal drama and inconsistent RP quality. The module that was used throughout its many incarnation was also of average quality and technically unimpressive.

I only played there because of a few very awesome players.

-Dragon Coast: Erithorn's Might ("DC: EM")
Well-built PW with a lot of work and thought put into the module and setting. Unfortunately, also the most elitist server I've ever seen, with a bloated and conceited staff. The server offered reasonably good roleplay, but I found it stagnant, too drunk on its own glory.

There are only really two notable servers I have played on. The first was Island of Fredian and it was my very first PW I played on. Initially, the players were great (least the ones I came in contact with), and the world was expansive. The DM team there was very small at first (only the creator and one other) before they expanded the DM team starting with me first. I played there for well over a year before the playerbase started to alienate me.

Eventually, I made my way to Cormyr and the Dalelands and played there since the beginnings of its beta. I DM'ed there for a while as well until, like Ralek said, it went down to a passworded stage because the other staff members could not deal with problem players anymore. It went down again eventually due to a disagreement with the persons hosting the server.

So now here I am, Sundren being my first NwN2 server and I've been thoroughly pleased so far.

NWN1- Ashen was my first and fav RP server. Hardcore. Only items you could buy were -1. All other gear had to be found or quested for. And later crafted. I had over mill xps and was lvl 14. Only on person came close to lvl 20 before the world emploded.
Arynwind- had some awesome custom PrCs. And some great craftable items. Was RP lite and hi lvl chars were way overpowered(150-200hp crits with a longbow)

NWN2- Frontier- Left for the reasons mention earlier.

                        Now Sundren.

First role-playing experience and server was a server called Avlis back in 2004. I loved it and stayed for about two years. This was truely an amazing server. However, they have not decided to make an NWN2 server so I have propagated here and am enjoying myself immensly.

The variety of characters I generally RP are CG Elven Rangers and CG Human Sorcerers. Luke is my first attempt at a LG Paladin. I must say it is a bit more difficult for me to do the LG because I find myself concidering what a LG character would do in certain situations more than I would a CG character of sorts.

I have an interest in training to be a DM sometime. However, I feel I need to prove myself as a player before seeking the trust of becoming a DM.

Anyway, that is a little about my role-playing background. Also, for those who are curious, I am a 24 year old Turbine Engine Mechanic persuing a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, so I lead a busy life-style at the moment.

Nwn1 would be the Three Kingdoms server, which was a pretty good one. They had a fairly big Custom made map, and alot of decent roleplayers. Problem was they -hated- pvp. In my opinion, PvP is an essential thing in roleplaying. .Why be afraid of the twice-your-level chaotic evil barbarian with magic equipment if he's not allowed to attack? Other than that, good server, but nothing like what i've seen on Sundren

Nwn 2, I took a great interest in the Heroes of the Third Age server (still getting built), because of it's Lord of the Rings theme. I never expected to find something like Sundren here, I have to admit it's better than most roleplaying guilds in games that's being paid for.

                              Oooo hooo..

                              NWN1

Realm of Lost Legion - First one.. really liked it..but not alot of Dm interaction it had great ideas for persistant quests and how it was handled. Lots of factions and rp was fun cause you could talk smack in the shout channel. yeah sounds unreal..but heck i loved it.

Dragoncoast / IB/EM: IB was kinda fun i enjoyed playing in there it seemed the DMs had good quests and stuff at that time.

EM was built very well but I guess I played a Dm approved character there that they didn't think i was playing right. They never told me and simply ignored my character for so long. I tried to initiate things with my character and was still ignored. I kinda gave up.

EOE( empires of Eternity): This is sort of a split off of Dragon coast, but it was a great server for players and lots of Dm activity and quests.. could get really involved easily. Didn't agree with alot decisions there and i still visit there once in awhile but the build of the city is old and crusty and very boring ( loot system needs massive upgrade including the world) . The Dms are pretty leniant there and Admin . They really try to cater to the players alot and allow them to make decisions in the server thats what makes it cool.

Blackstone Keep: I got Godbeast on this server cause it was funny to go on quests and get uber stuff. RP on it sucks arse and I rp with everyone, powergamer or not just for amusement. I still have my 38th level Monk/druid with dragon shape... its funny running around as a blue dragon with haste and monk speed..
