Both NWN1 and NWN2, I'm curious as to what people's (the ones that check the forums at least) backgrounds are.
Almost as soon as NWN1 came out I found a project called NWNOnline. It was a RP/story PW set in Cormyr right after the events of the death of King Azoun and the Death of the Dragon. It was based on Hardcore Rules scripts and very very tough combat wise; CR1 orcs there would powerattack you with 18 or 20 STR and greataxes... I got hit a couple times for around 60 or 70 dmg on a crit... by a CR 1 orc. All the monsters were leftovers from the Dragon's army and very well trained and armed; they used the half orc models rather than standard orcs which made them look that much more intimidating. No one made it to lvl 2 if they soloed.
The project never made it out of beta unfortunately for a number of different reasons, although in the beginning they had a really top notch team and a large playerbase.
Eventually I found ALFA; it too had a custom hardcore ruleset very close to PnP rules and was the most intense RP/story/plot driven community I found anywhere. I had some incredible highs and lows with ALFA's characters and storylines with top notch RPers who opened my eyes to what you could do with the NWN game engine and the DMs were top notch. They had strict standards for RP which were consistently reinforced and added to the focus on RP and DM driven plots; virtually no one farmed on ALFA with any kind of regularity. As well, the playerbase was very good about policing themselves. Leveling was slow, also lending to a PnP like feel.
Eventually I took a break after my most successful PC died at lvl 6 or 7 (no such thing as respawns, and as the death occurred in a cave unknown to others, no rez); when I came back the playerbase had gone largely stagnant and some rules were being put in place that were a bit too over the top like weighted arrows, so I didn't really play regularly for long.
Now you know why I think things like death are creampuff on most NWN2 servers.
NWN2: I tried a couple of servers and was dismayed at the overall lack of RPing, until I found The Frontier and found quality RPers; everyone had to fill out bios to get accepted and PCs approved which I think weeds out a lot of people. The content was very good compared to the other servers I'd seen as well; I played there religiously for a while. Eventually I starting seeing some issues with staff and some DMs that I won't go into, along with way too many high levels running around eventually as xp, gold, and gear got more and more inflated. I also started a PC elven faction that after finally getting approved, got zero support/interaction from staff, adding to my disappointment. I still am around occasionally there but decided to take a bit of a break, especially after finding a link to Sundren from the Thieves' Guild website, and was very impressed by the background/history, the website, staff, and last but not least the content of the mod still in beta stage.
I by no means consider myself a great RPer, but I do look for an environment that has consistent RP even if it's not epic level; that's why I love DM events that are story driven, not because of rewards necessarily but because there's a focused plot/storyline that you can jump onto and interact with dynamicly. Having said that I won't turn down a mithral twilight chain shirt anytime soon if one is found. :P
