  • My earlier post was a bit of a joke, but right now I would suggest the DDR2 type RAM right now because it's surprisingly cheap (WAY cheaper than DDR3, like hundreds of dollars cheaper). I don't really think tuning you RAM to your processors FSB should be that big of a deal though (although most processors now, like the dual cores, will run PC2 6400, although if you ram frequency is higher than the processors it should automatically compensate like RAM does, for instance if you have 1 stick of DDR2 800 and one DDR2 667 they will both run at the speed of the DDR2 667 without any problems, you just won't be achieving the full capabilities of some of the parts, be it a stick of ram or a bit of processing power. *shrug* RAM timings on the other hand should always be the same, to my knowledge, I've never tried combining RAM with different timings before, but I have been advised against it in the past. In most cases though it shouldn't be a problem finding the right RAM to go with your processor and the prices of the RAM in your processors category aren't going to be vastly different, so it's just more efficient to buy the right RAM the first time.

Edit for input on above hijacked question - I can normally change the install path to whatever I want it to be when I install a game, one of the first things it asks me is where I want it installed to and although I normally use the default I can change it to whatever I want it to be. Was yours not allowing you to do that?

      QFT

That's one thing I forgot: a disclaimer saying "this is only if you want maximum performance". Of course, despite creating some more hassle, consider how awesome it is to be able to honestly say "yeah, I had to spend an extra hour looking for my new RAM. I had to match the FSB to the frequency on the data fetch. I swear, I had to sort through so many PoS items with crappy latencies. Then I found this one and was like OMG 'cuz it had about 200 extra MHz of freq to OC with my processor. Yeah"

In other news, I have come to realize that my new motherboard lights up the inside of my case somewhat like a small, flat, black christmas tree.

Edit for the edit for my hijacked question: Yes, it wasn't. (That sentence sounds horrible in English, IMO). It would just start installing on Window's default %Root%/Program_Files/etc location.

        What do GHz do?

        • GHz are the measure of how fast your [insert part name here] can access/process/return data. I assume you know that a hertz is a measure of frequency, meaning 1 cycle per second? A GHz is 1 billion hertz. Therefore, 1 million cycles per second; ie 1billion bits (I believe) per second in the case of processors.

Bigger GHz = Faster = Better

          • GHz are the things that bind little communities of MHz together to form a stronger community. Kinda like those giant fighting robots that link together to make bigger robots. Only in this case the robots represent processing speed. (Along with some other aspects on the processor, such as FSB and caches).

Edit - What does QFT mean?

Yargh! the math department strikes again. 1 billion x 1 cycle = 1 million? one of those is an error *teehee* (I'm just pulling your leg with this one lol)

Heh. Yeah, that million should be a billion, if you couldn't tell.
