The more the better, thus why i loved the Legend of drizzt it took more then 3 months to read the whole thing.

        I feel like an outcast...*coughs*
So... I'm not really big on fantasy literature. Yes, hypocrisy runs deep in my veins. However, for me, Terry McGarry has my vote for my favorite book, within the fantasy genre, Illumination.

Other than that, here's a list of my personal favorites that I own.

        Anton Chekhov
        --------------
A collection of short stories and plays.
        Uncle Vanya
        The Party
        The Grasshopper
        Mire

        Jack Kerouac
        -------------
        On the Road
        Big Sur
        Mexico City Blues
        The Dharma Bums
Windblown World: The Journals of Jack Kerouac

        Voltaire (Francois-Marie Arouet)
        ------------------------------
        Dictionnaire philosophique (translated)
        Le Mondain (also translated)

There are probably too many for me to list, but those are a few of my favorites...

Oh, and I truly enjoyed the Riddle-Master of Hed, by Patricia A. McKillip.

Ah, I'd almost forgotten. Anything by Terry Brooks, R.A. Salvatore, and Tad Williams...

Okay, so I do like a bit of fantasy...sue me. You knew I was joking about not liking it at the beginning though!

I've read most of what others have read in this thread in the past, so I won't really bother listing them... Needless to say; allot, though at the moment I'm having a hard time pulling myself away from the Gaunts Ghosts series, reading about regular soldiers take on super-humans is awesome... Mostly because the super-humans usually take a fair number of characters. Except for Gaunt himself, but that's cause he's a crafty Colonel-Commissar.

I'll read nearly anything by H.P. Lovecraft, but I've also got a few Tom Clancy books around somewhere as well. Also, I have the odd miscellaneous book, such as Thomas More's Utopia.

But, to be honest, most of my reading is done on Sundren these days.

Meh. Robert Jordan just died, lovely. His series wont continue on, which means, i suggest to those that haven't read it, don't, unless you like an unfinished ending... I knew this was going to happen >_<.

                Some of my favorites

I've personally found Raymond E. Feist to be an excelent writter, he is one of the few writters out there who pay as much attention(if not a little more) to warriors as he does to mages, assassins and merchants included. His characters are more realistic then most, for example, gods don't intervine in the workings of mortals directly, mages aren't immortal (I'm thinking Elminster, really I like the books, but how many times can you die and come back to life?), death is permanent and generally characters die. Try the riftwar saga and the Serpentwar Sage and you'll see what I mean.
Another great author is Ursulla LeGuin, if you haven't read fer et, you've sinned, EarthSea is a wonderfull world.
One of the more pleasant authors is Robert Hobb, with the Fool series and Assassin.

                  Among my favorites:

                  > The Lord of the Rings (one trilogy to rule them all ) by J.R.R. Tolkien (if you only know the movies, definitely read the books)

                  > Riftwar & Serpentwar sagas by R.E. Feist

                  > Belgariad & Elenium sagas by D. Eddings

                  > Song of Fire & Ice by G.R.R. Martin

                  > The original Conan stories by R.E. Howard (I prefer Howard's stories to those of later authors, but that's a matter of personal preference)

                  > Elric of Melnibon? by M. Moorcock (I've read other cycles by Moorcock as well, but didn't like them as much)

                  > The Last Wish by A. Sapkowski (it's the first of the series the upcoming game 'The Witcher' is based upon. I liked it, but it may be too extreme for some tastes)

I for one have always enjoyed all of Raymond Feist's books. But I happened on a very good writer a few years ago and have read all his books in the series and that is David Goodkind. First book was Wizards first Rule.

Generally all of the Earthsea books, by Ursula K. Le Guin. I also own a few of the Dune books, though I'd regard those as strictly "Science Fiction", and not "Fantasy".
                        Much love to the series.

The Fionovar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay is an amazing series and really well thought out, another favorite of mine are the Mithgar series (The Iron Tower, The Darkest Day ect) by Denis L. McKiernan, lots of interesting stuff there. I've read the Drizzit books (a few of them anyways) they were ok but become formula pretty quickly. I liked the Dragonlance books, though since I'd played the campaign I pretty much knew how things were going to be, still I enjoyed the story. I love the old Fritz Lieber (not sure of his spelling) Swords of Lahnkmar series, loads of fun and great adventure ideas. I also enjoyed the Conan books, and Lovecraft.

I just picked up a book the other day about a goblin named Jif...haven't had a chance to start it yet, but it looks pretty funny. Seems he's the runt of his clan and he gets captured by an adventuring party who use him as a guide. Sounds like a hoot.

George Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series... I'll place my vote here. Martin does a fantastic job with his POV chapters.

Tolkien's been covered pretty heavily in this thread, so I'll skip that, but yeah, Brian Jacques' Redwall series was excellent. As for sci-fi, Warhammer 40,000 has my vote for best novels, specifically the Horus Heresy series.
