Mmh.... wasn't all that impressed with the Demo so far. It's pretty, for sure, and the limited choices of character are both good and bad I suppose - good because the character background can be part of the plot, bad because you have to use someone else's toy to play with.

Did not see any "Hawke" there though, not yet. Am I missing something?

I also died early on in the demo because apparently I suck at killing stuff even when my character is being built for me <.<
Annaleen Wiltenholm-There's always something to smile about.
Chani Kalera- Intimidation is the new diplomacy. *looms*
Eleanor "Bloody Elle" Lark - Why is the rum always gone?
Yolanda Brown - If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. But unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is going to suck.
    Astrid Hammerhand - Och!

Bioware didn't do themselves any favours with that demo. It's just a restricted taster of the combat, which tells you nothing about an RPG.

I'm not too far into the game yet, but it's shaping up to be interesting. It seems to have a much narrower scope than the first one, which isn't bad but it's certainly different.

[EDIT] Additionally, if your PC's up to it, make sure to install the HD texture pack. It's a gig worth of download, but well worth it.

      How do I get around?

I'll post some screenies later. Still getting my PC setup. DX11 very high + HD texture pack is great.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

          Hmmm.. Dilemma..

Just got a copy of II, but should I play through Dragon Age 1 & the expansion first?

Never bothered with it past the first town..

              Holy recycled maps.

Every house map is the same with encounters changed. Every cave is the same map with encounters changed.

You guys are really killing my desire to buy this game.
                Characters:
Peridan Twilight, one-eyed dog of the Legion, deceased.
Daniel Nobody, adventurer and part time problem solver.

I for one am really enjoying it, although opinion seems to be split. Don't listen to Corny, he's just a fanboy troll.

                    He's not wrong though.

It's a good game, just to me isn't as good as Dragon Age Origins. The maps are an example of them cutting corners to get the sequel out so fast.

It pains me to hear all this because Origins was such a great linear story with very pretty graphics and whatnot...except teeth

But for all its good points I managed one playthrough of Origins and One of Awakening before it grew stale. I havent made it through all the way on any of the DLC campaigns

Time and time again it has been proven

Going for quantity over quality just means youre a greedy bastard putting out crappy product...I imagine theyre afraid of TES 5 or something...I mean who else but bioware even put out an RPG in the last 2 years?

I don't think it has anything to do with Skyrim. After all, Mass Effect 3 is going toe-to-toe with it this winter.

It's just a system of trying to get every new iteration of a franchise out on a yearly basis, to maximize profit. EA and Activision both push for this from their big franchises. Unfortunately games are creative works that suffer from a yearly refresh: corners will be cut when you have such a tight release cycle.

Sadly "when it's done" is a phrase only Bethesda, Blizzard, ArenaNet, and Valve seem to use anymore. Two of those are self-published, Blizzard is big enough to tell their publisher no, and ArenaNet...is just lucky their publisher gives them so much leeway I suppose.

I think asset creation is something of a problem these days as well, it takes considerably longer to create in-game models for pretty much everything than it used to - Especially characters.

The increase in time taken to do that stuff tends to result in a drop off somewhere else - Here it seems to be maps.

Good game so far though, hopefully I'll manage to get a little farther this time than I did in Origins.

I'm liking the story approach, rather than the rather humorous 'build what you want' approach that's dogged CRPGs for years.

This is the issue I've noticed most with Dragon Age 2 so far, and it's about the only real gripe I have.

That aside, the gameplay and fighting are just plain fun, so much so that I hardly really care about the repetitive houses or dungeon caves. To be fair, Dragon Age: Origins did recycle maps as well, when using random encounters and such. It's just a little more noticeable here with the persistent areas.

I wouldn't let it bother you too much. The game is worth it.

Whose graven runes in tomes of dread have taught/ What things beyond the star gulfs lurk and leer.
Dark Lord of Averoigne- whose windows stare/ On pits of dream no other gaze could bare!"

Yeah its worth it. Its just after DA:O and ME: 2 I was expecting another A+ game. This one feels like a solid B.

... also every dude in Kirkwall seems wants to get on Hawk's jock, but if you're more into the ladies your options are (as far as I can tell) Ginger Frankenstein, Weird-Looking Elven Waif, or Pirate Slut.
