The trailer for Avatar has finally been released, this long awaited sci-fi epic by Canadian director James Cameron (famous for Aliens) uses a new 3D filming technology.

Here is the wikipedia synopsis of avatar:

The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully, is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. In order to participate in the Avatar program, which will give him a healthy body, Jake agrees to travel to Pandora, a lush rainforest environment filled with incredible life forms – some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also the home to the Na’vi, a humanoid race that lives at what humans would consider to be a primitive level, but are actually much more evolutionarily advanced than humans. Ten feet tall, with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Na’vi live harmoniously within their unspoiled world. But as humans encroach on Pandora in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi’s very existence is threatened – and their warrior abilities unleashed.
Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies in the real world, controlled by a human driver through a technology that links the driver’s mind to the Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Moreover, he falls in love with a young Na’vi woman, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched by her ferocity in battle.
As Jake slides deeper into becoming one of her clan, he finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Na’vi – forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

The main character is played by Sam Worthington which some people might recognize as Marcus Wright from Terminator Salvation.

Cameron has been working on this film since 1995 so this should be one of those few true gems in filming. This is one of those films you MUST see at IMAX 3D.

I must say I am really looking forward to seeing this film.

If something takes so long the result is usually disappointing

When you spend this much money on a movie, developing a new film technology, and this much post production... it doesn't surprise me he started writing it in 1995.

However I will watch you eat your words in December

Maevan has clearly been waiting on Duke Nukem for far too long. Don't get jaded!

I saw that trailer this morning and thought nearly the same thing, PL! The trailer alone has given me some inspiration for my PnP game.

I haven't trusted James Cameron since Titanic, but this does look like it could be fun. Lucky for me that I'm 5 mins walk from Imax

                    I.. Ugh... It..

Not wanting to sound overly harsh.. but that synopsis doesn't sound like it's 14 years old, it sounds like it was written when he was 14..

I mean, Pandora? does overshadowing need to be telegraphed in these days? Do we think the audience has no intelligence anymore?

Trailer does look pretty, but that mimicry stuff ages fast thanks to viewer expectations.

Still, I'll see it and hopefully enjoy it.

Consider for a moment this: Pandora was a designation given to the planet by humans -- no doubt because 1) we can't breathe on that planet 2) there are horrors beyond imagination to be found in its flora and fauana

I don't think I've heard of this. Is this a book or something I can check out first?

Nope it's a story crafted by James Cameron, it took him many years to bring it to the screen because the technology did not yet exist when he formed the idea in 95' .

Bit more awake now than last night..

Fair point on the name, though personally it still makes me cringe.. It's akin to calling any FTL/jumpgate system/doomsday weapon the Hubris device, calling a ship The Unsinkable, calling any spaceship going near a sun Icarus.. You know the kind of thing, it's just a bit cringeworthy. Getting posted to any mission with an ironic name must be the most depressing thing for any marine - you know you're coming back in a bag.

I hope, seriously, that it'll be good.. The teaser raises a few questions (Such as why didn't they catch the gun/power armour sizing issue - The guns stock intersects the suits arms whenever they move). Furry fandom (This film will have some truly vomit worthy fanfic) aside the organic design looks fantastic, the more mechanical design does seem slightly flawed (No back up air supply for the powered suits? what happens if a seal goes or something cracks your glass - What happens to your legs in the suits - why choose a face mask for the air system that would have major issues sealing with any facial hair?)..

That and it's been so damn long since Cameron's done anything decent.

I loved Abyss, Alien and Terminator, but Terminator 2 was pretty iffy, Rambo 2 was just painful dross, though I suspect we can than the screenplay rewrites for that. True Lies - An entertaining remake, Titanic? Sentimental tosspottery. Dark Angel was sub-par genericness with stilted dialogue.

It's been so damn long since he's made something that's really been good.. I do hope he's got something good in him, but pretty visuals do not a film make, and this looks irritatingly close to a lot of CG characters running around in CG environments while doing a slightly grittier version of FernGully: The last Rainforest.
