There was no hard cap of 42 charisma in NWN1. You may have gotten a wee bit confused with the fact that one could only get +12 to an attribute from items/spells/etc, and you had 30 base charisma at the time. The +12 bonus remains in NWN2, but since bonuses don't stack, you're unlikely to ever get it unlike NWN1 (since you'd need a +12 item to cap out charisma, for example).
