RPing the existance of items

I came across what was for me an uncomfortable RP experience today and I seemed to aggrivate the other player by not playing along.

I'm not sure if I myself was out of line or if it was as I felt at the time a bit of an odd one.

A character came up to me and wanted to sell me something. Something small, an RP item.

I asked to see it and they RPed showing me something.

I opened a barter tab so I might see the item and was informed that it didn't exist, it was Roleplay.

I consider myself open minded with things, such as RPing picking a flower and giving it to someone without the item existing in a physical capacity to give back and forth etc but this was something that I could have considered using and holding and using in RP for the life of the character. To pay for such a thing and it to only be imaginary and to persist as such was just like imagination within imagination to me which was... all fussy and strange.

Am I being a little bitch for not playing along?

We have a crafting system and it was the sort of thing it would be nice if wood crafters could craft and sell to players for use in game but to sell such a thing and say you spent hours making lots of them when there is nothing actually there and no use of the crafting system involved... gah i made my point I think.

First of its ok if ya don't wana ride along rp. Its your choice. It was me that tried to rp with you. I don't remember asking any gold. I specified rp sale.

It is the same. It was only something to bring life to the game. Its the same as if my character gave ya water to drink.

So what if you have to rp using items? "He takes out his hand carved pipe puts in tabaco in and lights it. The smell of the dried leaves are refreshing. He smokes joyfully" is not that hard to do

Roleplay for me = using imagination for fun for youself and others. Making a dead world full of colors and life

Water is a simple commodity though on a server that persistantly rains.
It doesn't require crafting and it's existance in somebody drinking it is a momentary RP.

I've played on many servers where pipes were an item you buy and visually hold. when you use them they requires one of various kinds of pipeweed and there was a smoke animation and the pipeweed was used up.

That added to the RP but this was just odd.

I don't want to be a nag but there was something imaginary that I almost wanted to RP out in game, like point out that perhaps the last pipe weed you'd smoked was hallucinagenic because... mate there is no pipes in your hands.

Pass over some imaginary coins and pretend to smoke from the imaginary pipe and then run away whilst the mental health issue halfling was not looking.

I think the source of the wierdness was that the production of the imaginary item was the source of the RP and RPing for the sake of RP, oh i'll imagine i have something i don't and pretend to sell it imaginarily to someone who i have not met before and randomly walk up to them on the street in game as they are walking past.

If we had been to aquaintances in a bar in the game and there had been a neccessity for Rping the existance of the pipe, i.e. your character was smoking, and we have no actual pipes on the server, that is roleplay. Then perhaps I point out how good the craftsmanship is on the pipe, and behold you are a crafter of wands and jewelery and such with points in those skills. You RP that you have another pipe that I might buy. Indeed I might RP along and RP that I bought the pipe.

The only reason I think this has turned into me posting about it was that Shunt got annoyed at my not wanting to play along. It was an unreal feeling RP to me. I didn't want to be there. I apologise.

The feeling of awkwardness has just persisted in my mind since.

What is the right or wrong in this?

Well, as I see it, you could very well just given him some imaginary coin for the item as well.

I mean, plenty of people go into taverns and roleplay getting a drink without paying the NPC for it and then drinking it. Did they ever actually get the said drink? No, but they pretended and for all the other tavern goes... that was probably enough.

Maybe that particular situation got off the wrong foot or was awkward due to being unexpected?

my view of rp is rp what is comfortable if you find yourself uncomfortable by current rp seek to remove yourself then talk to the person. Though best to discuss this with staff due to posting it can be seen as an attack instead of a discussion.

Much like using a players forum id or charactor in a discussion its great when using as an example due to its kinda a YAY you, though if using as a question it can seem as a be little ment or an insult to rp.

Questions are great, and its not a matter of what is done more of how its done.

Questions of rp are best between players or staff. A forum posting can quickly come to flames or insults.

Right.. Let's get this straight.

You encountered a situation in game where another player RP'd offering you an object that could happily be created by most reasonable crafters, and would quite reasonably be thought to exist in most worlds. Yet, as the server doesn't have a physical representation of the item in question (A pipe and weed it would seem) you decided not to RP and to throw a hissy fit and post here?

If all we ever RP'd on the server was the objects or actions that can be represented by the game engine then it would be a sad day.

A great many things players do are represented not by an action, animation or model, but by a text emote. I can easily think of a few characters who regularly smoke rollups, cigars or pipes, none of which are ingame objects yet can be used to provide RP hooks or character detail.

When this new crafting system rears its head perhaps all will be resolved?

Woodcrafters might be able to craft 'useless' items like tobacco pipes and wooden charms (which I would love to see). Metal workers could perhaps make lucky horseshoe charms (Or which again I would love to see).
Its hard to RP something beyond the confines of the game engine and it IS frustrating. We just have to grin and bare it

This should have been handled by a private post in the appropriate forum or a PM to the DM staff for guidance. Don't air personal grievances with other players on the public forum.
