  • Upcomming Language Changes

There will likely be the following changes to languages.

    1) I will likely be removing a bunch from player selection. I'm not convinced anyone should know Abyssal, Celestial or other severely outlandish languages. Tieflings and Aasimar are removed from their fiendish and celestial ancestry and unless you grew up in the abyss as a back story, I'm not willing to entertain you were born with the language.

    2) DCs for languages will be raised greatly. DCs 10 - 20 are waaaaaay too easy.

    3) I will be adding Ebony Jive as a language "Yo, best be getting ya drink on son, ya jive turkey mutha!" <_< >_> ... a DM can dream -_-

Haha! Ebonics FTW! Can i like.. make a black man or maybe a severly distraught white guy who thinks he's black and get the Ebony Jive language?
    I can only dream..
Is it better to tell you the truth and make you cry, or is it better to lie, but make you smile? Think about it..

What if our character had a valid RP reason for knowing said language? Or do you judge that there is no RP reason valid enough for having learned a planar language?
Adama who was once called Adama Hrakness, sacred paw of Mielikki

Lihana Farrier, Paladin of Torm and noble dalliance

On Hold: Alandriel Ward, Actually a Vampire Groupie
Retired for Good: Tamryn Jorandur, Hano's Wife and Conflicted Soul

Clerics of faiths corresponding to certain alignments actually learn those languages, GodBeast. This is because a lot of the artifacts of their religion are written in said languages and many of their prayers are phrased in said language. It would be like a priest learning latin; it's not needed, but no one's complaining that they can delve deeper into their god.

Also, higher level planar wanderers would generally take a language from the plane they like outside of the Prime Material, just adding that in there. However, I don't think many people aside from those types have a valid reason to know the language... perhaps warlocks could know infernal and abyssal.

Amen to that. It's really strange when your starting character understands half of what is being said already....

There shouldn't even be a DC For simplicity sake usually you either know or don't know the language With a DC we might get people who never saw an orc understanding the language because they got lucky

(I'm not even going to touch exotic languages like Infernal, etc )

I'm not saying people can't convince DM's to -give- them the language. Just annoying seeing a rogue whose back story is "I was part of a thieves guild" speaking draconic or abyssal.

The Idea of the lore roll is "I know some of the language so there's a chance I might get the idea of what you're saying."

How many of us know what this means:

                  Buenos Dias Seniorita

Now, how many of us are fluent in spanish? Basically you just succeeded a lore check.

That's right to the point. Getting the jist of it from exposure.

Knowing how to ask where's the bathroom in orcrish is fine But does how much you roll makes a difference or it's a "beat or not beat the DC" case? I ask because I would find weird if someone rolled very high and suddenly understood everything in a foreign language

Um... GBX or anyone - can you point me to the description of 'understanding' languages and how it works? Or just explain it to me quickly?

I know it is a Lore check. Judging from your post, GBX, the DC currently is in the range of 10-20. But what parameters does the DC depend on? Length of words? Length of sentences?

                          I'm curious.

Also, GBX, remove any lore check from Cant language (Rogues). No amount of lore should be able to decipher body language meanings then put it in text. :|

I would like to defend one of my char's knowledge of Celestial. His mother taught him as a boy when she mothered him all alone. Of course the language was passed down from the father, who was a Celestial.
Is that applicable? Plus, Josef (which is whom I am speaking of) only has Celestial as a bonus language coz of a glitch I announced aloooonnnggg time ago (He has a 14 int). The language screen popped up suddenly and I clicked too fast, giving me a (BLANK) extra language...so then I just picked Celestial, coz of obvious reasons.
