But your character might not know right away that it's missing as soon as it's taken. That's the point of Pickpocket. If it didn't give you that message, you wouldn't know until you opened you bag, right?

Yeah, but the tip off is going to be whenever somebody gets too close to you when they are talking...
they better be much higher level... or the Axe comes out with a vengence. Unless that is what they stole in the first place.

Isnt the sleight of hand made versus a spot check?

It would make sense that the heaviest thing you could steal was how much you beat the spot dc by.... but thats just a suggestion

I don't think so, even if I didn't SEE you reaching into my pack, if it sudenly got 50 lbs (stones whatever :P) lighter....I think I would notice. You wouldn't notice say a few gold coins or a dagger even, not that much wight. It's kind of hard to deside, you also have to think, pickpockets don't normaly spend alot of time rummageing in your pocket, it's very quick, pulling full plate (or something else) out would take a while. To me it just makes no sense

anyway just my two sense, when I play rogure I normaly give back armors or large weapons, just becuase I can't see how it's possible to steal them

As a group, we experienced it the same as ninja looting. Noki walked into the tough fight we were in, in full sight with three rogues around but hell, pickpocketed three people and walked out. No spot, no listen, no sleight of hand check, just pure game mechanics. If we apply the same reasoning then we have all seen you, even Darren though he was playing dead on the ground. Quess Noki won't be sure of his life anymore. Metagaming ? Sure, but so did you right ?

Anyway, since there is no rule of consent on pickpocketing I'm sure there is nothing to be done about it and you were in all your rights

a ruling on PP would be nice my poor mage lost over 100 gold last night while Rping in the Port. Surely i'd notice the weight of that much missing gold immediately. But my spot checkmakes me blind as a bat when it comes to spot so i didnt notice it until i went to buy something.

Not to compare, but we had this honor system or whatever with the players on the Frontier, not that everyone abides by it. But, say the heavy things like the full plate, boots, great swords/axes and such, if PP'd must be returned to the victim with an OOC exchage of lets say some gold or a smaller item.

Surely noone can PP fullplates or those huge weapons. Not even if your human or half-orc, especially not if you're a hin or a gnome, it would be impossible to snatch something twice your size and get away with it, unless you can grab it and run like you're on steroids.

That was the point of my original post, I'm hoping the DM's put together some guidelines so my character does not feel he needs to keep everyone at a distance.
I'm all for personal space, but it can be anti-social and borderline paranoid in public.

Alright, reading this thread, I'm going to make this ruling.

1) You may NOT pickpocket the same person more than once in a 24 hour span, period. Failures or other such things count as your one attempt.

2) Heavy objects must be returned OOC'ly or you -must- RP that you were automatically "Spotted" which means informing the person you took it from. This will be considered a "Snatch" and run action. You can't stealthily remove a tower shield from a soldier's back, but you can snatch it and run.

These are considered automatically detected:
- Over 10 for weight
- Over 100 coins

3) If you are not stealthed when you make the attempt, you are assumed to be walking by and using techniques like "Bumping" into the person or such to throw off your stealing attempt. If they happen to notice the object gone, and you are not stealth, then they may "Guess" you took it.

4) I'm iffy on this one, but I'm going to say it as a "Guideline" more than a "Rule". Thieves are assumed to be concealing they have an object. If they steal a scroll they might have it in the drawls or what not. I hope players roll search or something for finding things or at least giving the benefit of the doubt.

5) Pick Pocketting does not require permission to do since I'm of the opinion most people will go "NO! I LOVE MY STUFF! GET OUT OF HERE THIEF!" but please respect players who are having a tough time. Stealing 200 coins from a level 3 is like a level 15 killing a level 3. It's jacked up and borderline griefing. And nothing is to say you can't be polite and RP out the pick pocketting through tells.

Player A: I want to steal from you, but I don't want to jack you for anything expensive. You mind if I just take something of little value? Potion? Healing kit?

Player B: I got a bless scroll?

Player A: Alright, that'll work, I'll roll sleight of hand and you roll spot.

Player A: I was going to steal from you since my character is a Kleptomaniac, does you character have alot of wealth? I don't really want to take from players that are just starting or what not.

Player B: Well, I only just started playing so I have like, 400 coins.

PLayer A: Alright, I'll just pass you up then.

There you have it. Just because mechanics work a certain way doesn't mean YOU have to work that way.
