  • Roleplaying Spells

I was contemplating on how we have a decent increase in Roleplaying skills, and I started to think about the few Roleplaying spells we have available to the casting classes and how I would like to see more PnP spells to become usable.. To validate my idea I started to compare the different Roleplaying actions a non-caster could efficiently do to the different actions a caster could efficiently do, It seems to be there are more RP options (they are efficient at) open to those that are not restricted to spells and can do various actions based on their class, skill, and stat set. While the caster may be very restricted to the NWN2 list of spells from bioware or the few spells from the custom hack, this does seem to be quite the restriction considering we have a Thayan enclave and when RPing we dont have alot of unique opportunities that we should have. ((I do give you many kudos for the Custom spells, Scrying, and custom skills. To summarize, I think It would be nice to have some PnP spells for the use in DM events.))

When you think of things in terms of the concept of the "Weave", a whole range of possibilities open up toward what you can accomplish, even with the relative restriction of NWN2 spells- if you but use your imagination. Now, of course one has to be reasonable, and make sure they do not do anything that would be considered 'god-modding'. Perhaps spellcraft checks can aid this, but I'll elaborate on that shortly.

I think it is a good idea- and I'm sure people have done this already at some point- to start a thread to discuss what would fall into that 'acceptable' category, and what would not.

That said, let me pose an example. Shield, and or Mage Armor (maybe even endure elements): A simple spell such as this, when given some thought, can be manipulated in such a way as to create mundane barriers, force-fields if you will, or a thickening of the air. Logically, there are exceptions and stipulations as to how far you should go with this. Binadas has been known to raise a simple shield about his person, merely to redirect the rain from his head and shoulders.

Now, if you wanted to make something like this a bit more interesting, you could roll spellcraft, or concentration (assuming you haven't "tied off the knot" on the spell ) to see if the ward would hold if , say, it began to hail....

I'd love to see more custom spells. I'd like a Prestidigitation spell, with like 20 options for effects you can do!

But it's hard to allocate our developer resources to it. We just have other higher priority things right now.

On this note I was thinking more along the lines of spells being added to the Wiki which were avaialable via reference, not actually developed into scrolls but usuable during an DM event where the application is suitible. Simply a list and reference of the available spells would be sufficient. Although now that i am thinking of it, it would be hard to validate which spells the wizard had already memorized, although in a case like yesterday where i prepared before hand and disguised myself as a woman who had her children captured by goblins and ogres, I could have used ghost sound to imitate my child's screams inside the ogre cave as validation to my story. (I wish i knew how to develop such spells, a scroll and icon that would take up a spell slot. That would be a project I would be interested in.)

Here are a couple of examples of useful basic spells that are really not that elaborate and are very basic to the practiced wizard.

        Cantrips
Ghost sound, Mage hand, Arcane mark,

        1st Circle
Comprehend Languages, Detect Secret Doors, Erase, Feather fall, jump, know protections, Nystul's Undetectable Aura, Silent Image, Spider Climb, Ventriloquism,

Zem, I think the DM team could support those, it's just a matter of getting them reviewed and added. If you can get the DM team a list of spells with PnP rules, we can review and add what we can.

Personally, I fully trust the DM team to be able to handle roleplaying spells. After all, are not DMs there to make what the game engine cannot do possible?

That sounds like a really good idea!

I always played out Endure Elements line of spells as kind of a element retardant coating on your mage pajamas

*I suggest we move the thread to the suggestions forum.*

I have the divine spell compendium for role playing purposes finished for review. I am still working on the Arcane Compendium to try to make it more manageable for the DM's.

I am going to try the hosting site.

Very nice, Ive spotted a few things in Sundren's custom spells that match some of the descriptions though. We have discern lies as a clerical spell dont we?

Correct, and glyph of warding is a standard NWN2 spell.

May include Purify Food and Drink as an actual spell... we'll see.
