  • Re: Poor Judgement

i was having a great time on sudren earlier tonight. we had a fun party. we were a party of 4 - levels 5, 5, 6, and 7-8. we were in the ogre caves doing a fine job.

all of this got shot to sh*t when all of a sudden a group of six (overpowering - impossible) comes running up behind us. setting us all to hostile. then they say "we are looking for skullcleavers" we say "thats us" they say " you will die for your crimes against bane" then out right kill us.

NO ooc asking for participation in this "rp session" if you can call it that.

i remember reading this a while back when i first joined sundren:

    * Players may opt out of PVP that is completely unwarranted. For example, we don't want level 20's killing level 5's who are not even trying to pick fights. That's just plain malicious and will only frustrate the level 5 who obviously has no chance of winning. If this level 5 does not want to fight IC and OOC, LEAVE THEM ALONE! All the RP in the world is not going to excuse this for me. However, if this level 5 is calling your mother a hairy pig and being an ass, then obviously he is just trying to hide behind this ruling.

    this excerpt from http://www.sundren.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5131

the real travesty in this is that there was a DM involved as a banite PC.
now after this little event the above relogged as a DM and we were given a signus to res so no harm there... i guess. I have been a DM myself and as such my responsibility is to do everything in my power to ensure my players are having fun... that's what it's all about. If you wanted to pick a fight with the skullcleavers there are many ways you could have gone about it. this was the worst one i can think off.

pvp is a danger we all understand and acknowledge it has its place and certainly adds to the realism and danger, but this was far from good pvp.

gbx's post specifically denounces this sort of grief. It has done just as gbx predicted, frustrated a few lower level gamers who, until now, have had very positive experiences.

this has been a very disappointing end to what began as a great evening.

My advice, turn searchable off. People tend to flock to areas that have people in them.

Yikes. I didn't think that sort of thing happened on Sundren.

You should send screenshots of the aftermath to Saulus. I think that would be better than starting a forum thread, no?

When I had an incident on another server where a new DM went "overboard", I sent a PM to the head of the server through the web site. The situation was handled promptly and fairly.
This is the best signature I could think of.

I'll start by saying that you are in right to question what had happened, but will also say that Mattachine is just as right. These types of matters are best handled through PMs, or as help requests to avoid excess of comments and opinions from outsiders to ensure we can handle your problem promptly.

GodBeastX believed that no amount of RP will justify a high level killing a low level, sans being an arrogant asshole. I will have to respectfully disagree with him and note for everyone that he is no longer part of the Sundren staff.

My understanding of it is this; the Skullcleavers acted against the Bane followers one day and then on another day, the Bane followers struck back at the organization. Do I believe that your side had a chance of winning this battle while under those particular circumstances? No. For these reasons, I believe your party should not be penalized as you did nothing wrong. And to my understanding, none of you were. I would also say that your party should receive a cookie for participating despite the odds against you, to reward your participation and to encourage further conflicts.

Ultimately I am ruling that this particular CvC incident was justified with enough RP, however, if this continues or is repeated a second time to the same group of people while under the same or similar circumstances? I will be busting balls and issuing penalties to the assailants, as that would be borderline harassment.

With all of that said, please try to understand that you, as a player, did not lose today. Your character did, and it was only a single battle. The war, however, is not won yet, and the outcome of it will be decided by your future course of actions, plotting, and planning. Conflict broods RP, my friend, and without it the server would be a social server where people sit in the Sundren Comfort for eight hours on end.

Thank you for your time and understanding, gbbishop.

Edit: Locking down this thread. If you wish to discuss this in more depth, gbbishop, then please feel free to send me a PM or recreate this thread in the Help Requests forum.

GBB please feel free to send me a private message if you want to hug it out. Venting on the forum isn't something we're going to be happy about. You can see even the player base didn't like it.

GBX is gone, and I think he PVP statements might need some updating. However, I'd like to point out his comment about "calling your mother a hairy pig." This is pretty close to what happened the previous night, when your group threatened a smaller group of Banites. This isn't tit for tat, but that session opened the door for consequences.

I would like to point out that, even if you don't feel there was "RP value" in what occured, there will be. Think of the future conflict between the Skull Cleavers and the Banites. Although you can't remember any faces, you certainly found those Banite symbols in your bags.

Each of you received a signus and an opening for future conflict with the Banites, which in my book DOES count as good roleplay. We received about 90 minutes of solid plotting and tracking roleplay (no, we didn't metagame to just show up in the caves, it had nothing to do with the search button).

As time passes, I hope you begin to feel differently about what happened.
