  • Lore Sources - Forgotten Realms

If you have trouble getting a hold of the vast archive of lore that is The Forgotten Realms, like me (very new to the forgotten realms), I hope for this thread to be the remedy of that situation.

If you have any lore sources, or requests for lore - post it here.

    My lore source: http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

This wiki has a very large amount of lore to be read, from deities, to geography. There are, however, some missing articles - so if you know your lore and know wiki's, please fill in the blanks!

The use is simple, to your left you will have a search bar - type in your topic and you will be carried away to another part of the library! Beneath the search bar you will see other links, my favorite one is portals. Highlight this link if you are not searching for anything specific, but more of a broad topic.

    I hope this helps!

    Now, your turn <3

Edit: Gah! Needs to be moved to public information.

I used that site and also re-read the Icewind Dale trilogy when trying to hash up Zim's background. Wikipedia was also of some use.
"If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle." -- Frederick Douglass

Another good Realmslore and listing of FR material published over the years is located here: http://www.candlekeep.com/

This has tons of material and other links for sources that the Wiki (from what I've noticed) just doesn't have any info for. Good chunks of this are from the good 'ole days of FR beginning when it was still AD&D 2nd Edition (what I like to call, the classics)....plus the best of all of the novels were published during this time like:Icewind Dale Trilogy, Spellfire, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Pool of Radiance etc.

This has links to many of the obscure mods and compendium material that is never mentioned or is mentioned with incorrect DR timelines in the 3rd edition.

Remember, If it's FR.....then look no further than Mr. Ed Greenwood.

I've run into this conflict on some servers:

D&D game material occasionally differs from FR Novels. As a gamer, I go with the D&D version, but some folks go with the version in the novels.

In case it matters, what do folks on Sundren tend to prefer?
This is the best signature I could think of.

          Whatever the DM tells you.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

True enough....cept D&D is the Problem....WotC are the problem, they haven't nailed down the 14+ years of material correctly was the point I was making.

Novels are not the only source, AD&D was the source long before Wizards got ahold of it and screwed it up.

On a PW only lore that matters is the stuff listed in forums, in wiki, found IG, or told by dm. Never a bad idea to base some rp off some lore or idea from other sources, but for lore of the realm best to go with what is gained from the realm. (also when using such ideas outside of what is listed a good idea is ask staff, communication is a way to avoid 90% of the problems).

Void, the reason for me liking to learn the lore outside of sundren is to get a good storyline going for my very own character - as most characters came through the sunderer at one point in time.

oh I got nothing wrong with learning lore outside the PW, and what you mention is a good idea. Though if something feels iffy or just want to add something from some source never a bad idea to ask.

I mean if you want to rp a cleric, having a few tales outside of what is listed could make for a great story. Just expect it to be as such until staff puts their stamp of aproval that X diety really did Y.

Just my way of thinking. Does it make more sense now?

Oh yea definitely. I'm always iffy about people putting together "Mary-sue" characters as it were. Going outside the realm of normality to make their character interesting without any lack of creativity at all.
