Setting teams? An agreed-upon outcome? Come on guys--risk and reward.
I know players love subdual, but it is not there to be agreed upon OOCly beforehand. Subdual is there in case the attacker does not want to KILL the person he's attacking. It is not meant to circumvent XP loss, even though that's what it does in the end. Using subdual, or not, should ALWAYS BE A RP DECISION and not dictated beforehand.
The more I'm reading everyone's thoughts on this event, the less I'm liking it. If you set everything up in advance, you take risk and roleplay out of the equation. I can't tell you how many times I hear players complain that DM events are "predetermined."
I see your points regarding subdual, but I'd have trouble bringing conflict if no one wants to lose XP --- especially if the level spread is large. In a DM-run event, the DM's are around to help balance things. The outcome isn't necessarily predetermined either. Any side can lose. The risk is the gold being lost. Like the example with the "patrol" or "escort", instead of doing the quick route (i.e. click on Gate of Sundren icon) I would be doing a route where ambushes are possible.
I know there for other non-conflict events that can be run (like the bard contest) and I'm for that too but when we're in city gates or the trade post, less bad stuff tend to happen --- some people like that
.
Anyway, I'll take your points into consideration. As a player though, my risk/reward wand doesn't work as well. Hmmm... maybe I'll just make an EPC and kidnap someone (*winks at Darc*)characters:
Jos'iah Ithildurin - Semper, a guardian of Haldemar. "One should always be faithful"
Elijah - Warrior Mage and Legionairre of Sundren. "My axe and my magic will cleave you!"
Duskthorne - Bounty Hunter. "Every land needs a masked man to do the dirty work for them" (personal heroes: The Knight of the Flying Rodent and The Monk of the Arachnid Order)

I'm trying to avoid the following problems:
"If you don't turn on subdual, you can't participate in my event."
"Joe forgot to turn on subdual. Can I have my XP back?"
"Joe didn't use subdual! He's a jerk. Let's send him tells about how angry we are."
As a player, you can never force someone to turn on subdual, nor can you tell them not to jump into the frey of your event if they refuse to use it.
Again, we're treading dangerous water at this point. The less you try to regulate as a player, the better off you are with this request."Microsoft has to move the Reply All button further away from the Reply button. It's the computer equivalent of putting the vagina so close to the sphincter."
