I stay in character by keeping this in mind:

No matter how much gold I loose, how much items I get stolen, how many player-versus-player battles I die in, how much humiliation I go through, it's just a game and none of it is going to kill me unless I make it. So to enjoy the bad parts of things, I just keep that in mind and roleplay through it.

Lots of great ideas and more.

It's also like actors/actresses. To really ensure the audience believes your performance, they become the character immersed in the role.
Bottom-line for me: I have to enjoy roleplaying that character. If it is a chore, or not really that interesting or fun, then the character doesn't last that long and I look for a better fit for me.

Generally, giving a character a personality to stick to is how you remain in character no matter what.

When people play evil, they tend to focus on the "Actions" they're going to do more than the personality behind the actions. Normal people don't try to just kill everyone for everything they do, so you have to ask yourself, why does my character want to kill people? Why does he rob? Why does he get angry? Etc etc. As your answer those questions you wind up with a persona for your character, and eventually you can apply it to everything you do.

You might be tempted to say:

        "My character wants power!"

...but if you add to that:

"My character wants power because inside he's afraid of being weak or considered weak."

Just that right there can enhance RP. Everyone has quirks, little things that make them different than everyone else. I see alot of players bringing out these quirks in their characters. Top notch stuff. However, my advice is, Keep it simple, and for first time RP'ers or what not, it's easiest to make a character that is closer to your own personality since you can start to ask yourself honestly "What would I do in that situation?"

I also want to commend you for coming to the forum and asking, shows a very good quality in an RP'er to ask for help with RP.

...and on the 3000 coin subject...

That event had me laughing so hard, the Dwarf made it soooo much better with the reality checks. "You're fighting over Dung money!"

I've had some years of roleplaying experience behind me, and what I do is try to not get it too complicated, I want it to be fun, and I think that RP is not so much as how to play your character, but moreso about how your character plays with other characters. Some people have more personality traits on their characters than themselves! Then it's not really about roleplaying anymore. It's about YOU, Just as any min/maxer stat-wh0re, you've min-maxed your characters persona :P

I've often had OOC chats that went like:

"Yeah my character would probably kill your character if he said that"
"my character has such a strong personality. IE he would always do this and never do that.. although I haven't been in that situation yet.."
            "My character HATES pudding"

So, when I logged in to Sundren, I wasn't sure if I would spend 5 minutes or 5 hours, so I went with something easy for me to play, an open-minded fun-loving halfling. Likes to get to know new people, is straight-forward and honest, no hidden agendas, and loves a good adventure. It's probably too simple for most, But this way I ensure that:

            - I'll have fun without giving the concept too much thought
            - ll get along IC'ly with mostly anyone, which is good since I don't know how many characters that will be on, how easy they are too find etc.
            - I won't find myself in a situation where I am unable to play my character properly because of lack of knowlege.

In other words, my advice is to keep it simple. atleast to begin with 8)

For me I create characters that are a little bit like myself. For example if you've ever seen the movie MallRats. Stan Lee is asked how did you come with the idea for the Hulk. He says something about it was a time when he had this pent up anger. Or something to that effect. I try to remember there is a part of me in each of my characters so essentially its how would I react to the situation. Dont forget even in real life a person can do or say something out of charater.

NWN is the only RP game I ever played. Never played DnD or any PnP games. When I started to play on RP servers a friend of mine who has role played for as long as I can remeber gave me this advice. Try to base your char on a movie or book character or a mixture of chars. You then have an outline of their personality and have seen or read how they react in certain situations. Then when you become comfortable with the char you can make them more personal.

I said "omg" once when people were all around me, just a habit I guess.

So I have the same problems.
